Horsepower vs. Pancakes: Toledo's Senior Day Engine Meets Unbeaten-in-MAC Western Michigan

Western Michigan (5-2) at Toledo (5-2)

12:00 PM ET Sat Oct 24 · Glass Bowl · CBSSN

Western Michigan (5-2, 3-0 MAC) at Toledo (5-2, 2-1 MAC). Saturday, Oct. 24, noon ET, Glass Bowl, Toledo, Ohio, CBS Sports Network.

Your hosts are Rocco Szczepanski, from a Jeep-plant family in the Glass City, who grades offenses in horsepower, and Corwin Dahlquist, a Kalamazoo paper engineer who rates opponents like diner breakfasts.

Rocco: Corwin, my friend, bring syrup. We're bringing the V8.

Corwin: Your offense is a full stack, Rocco. Ours comes with blueberries.

Players to watch

Toledo quarterback John Alan Richter has 1,853 yards, 14 touchdowns and just one interception, with 66.1% completions. Running back C.J. Miller has 426 yards and six touchdowns. Wide receiver Adjatay Dabbs has 32 catches for 468 yards and five scores. Toledo averages 36.3 points per game (28th in FBS) and 459.0 yards (20th). Its blockers have allowed only three sacks all season.

Western Michigan running back Jalen Buckley has 542 yards and seven touchdowns. He was the 2023 MAC Freshman of the Year. Quarterback Broc Lowry, the reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Year, has 1,044 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception. Wide receiver Aveion Chenault has 326 receiving yards. The Broncos' defense allows 16.9 points per game, 25th in FBS.

Rocco: Three sacks allowed all year. That's not a lawnmower, buddy. That's a Wrangler with the doors off.

What happened last week

Toledo spoiled Eastern Michigan's homecoming with a 34-14 win in Ypsilanti. The Rockets scored on all five of their first-half possessions and led 31-7 at halftime. Richter went 24 of 30 for 288 yards and a touchdown. Autavius Ison ran for 104 yards, his first 100-yard game of the season. Defensive end Andrew Zock had nine QB hurries, two sacks and a forced fumble, and Toledo held Eastern Michigan to 34 rushing yards.

Western Michigan won 21-14 at Central Michigan, and Buckley ran 24 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns. The Broncos have won three straight.

Corwin: A road rivalry win in Mount Pleasant. That's a full stack, and I needed the nap.

Injuries and availability

No official conference availability report has been published for this game. No injury news has surfaced for either team, so check back closer to kickoff.

What the coaches are up to

Mike Jacobs is in his first season at Toledo. He was hired from Mercer on Dec. 10, 2025, to replace Jason Candle. His defense has 20 sacks. Penalties are his project: Toledo ranks 126th in FBS in penalties, while Western Michigan ranks 24th.

Lance Taylor was hired at Western Michigan on Dec. 8, 2022. In December 2025 he signed an extension through the 2030 season after the Broncos won the 2025 MAC title. His team is plus-4 in turnover margin, 22nd in FBS.

Player storylines

Buckley against a Toledo run defense allowing 125.4 yards per game is Corwin's matchup. Rocco's is Richter against a Broncos pass rush with 16 sacks. Something has to give there, since Toledo has allowed only three. Lowry's efficiency is worth watching too: he has completed 68.0% of his passes.

Corwin: Pass protection that good has real tensile strength. I'd know. I studied paper.

What's happening on campus

It's Senior Day at the Glass Bowl, with a high-energy student tailgate before the noon kickoff.

Rocco: Senior Day, noon kick, engines warm. Corwin, park the pancake truck in the visitors' lot.

Corwin: Already there, Rocco. Short stack for the drive home, either way.

Anything else fun and true

Toledo leads the all-time series 39-24. Corwin will remind you that the Broncos are the reigning MAC champs, and Rocco will remind you that 39 is a bigger number than 24. Toledo's 2026 run includes a wild 49-48 win over Temple. Western Michigan's two losses were 13-12 at Michigan and at home to Boise State.

Rocco: One point at Michigan? Respect, Corwin. Now come to the Glass City and watch the V8 rumble.

Corwin: Full stack either way, Rocco. With blueberries.
