Meet Your Insider
Roll the Quad! I'm Eloise Brightman-Rowe, and I'm your Wake Forest insider here at The Cover Window. The short version: I'm a debate-team darling and Wake grad who rolls the Quad and roasts bad tackling. I follow this team from the stands, every week, and I love it out loud. Fair warning about my habit: debate-club roasts of bad tackling. On the podcast, my segment is called Debate Club. The show card describes it like this: a polite debate-team roast of bad tackling. My rules are simple. I keep it clean and kind, I celebrate players as people, I respect every opponent, and I never invent a stat, a quote or a fact. If I can't source it, you won't hear it from me. This week the Demon Deacons have an open date, so instead of a game preview you get the full tour: the school, the coach, the players, the league and what's next.
The School in 60 Seconds
Home is Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium in Winston-Salem, NC, built in 1968 with a listed capacity of 31,500. The fight song is "O' Here's to Wake Forest", per Wikipedia. The band is the The Spirit of the Old Gold & Black, per Wikipedia. The last five seasons went 11-3, 8-5, 4-8, 4-8 and 9-4, from 2021 through 2025. The most frequent opponents from 2016 through 2025 tell you who matters around here: NC State (5-5 in 10 meetings), Duke (4-5 in 9 meetings), Clemson (0-9 in 9 meetings), Syracuse (5-3 in 8 meetings). That's a list of games, not an official rivalry list. The 2026 recruiting class ranked No. 39 nationally in CFBD's team rankings. And if you visit, ask somebody about rolling the Quad; it's the tradition I'd show you first.
The Coach and the Scheme
Jake Dickert leads the Demon Deacons; CollegeFootballData dates the hire to Dec. 18, 2024. Through 7 games, Wake Forest scores 37.4 points a game and allows 19.4. By our math from CFBD figures, the offense runs on about 53% of its plays, gaining 155.6 rushing yards and 290.3 passing yards a game. That's a balanced menu. On third down, Wake Forest converts 48.9% of the time and opponents convert 42.6%. The defense has 18 sacks and 49 tackles for loss, and the turnover ledger reads 3 giveaways against 4 takeaways. Penalties cost 84.1 yards a game. The high-water mark so far was 57 points against Stanford on Oct. 3, 2026, and 2 of the 7 games were decided by eight points or fewer. Over the season, Wake Forest has outscored opponents by a combined 126 points. Every one of those numbers is a little homework for the open week.
Players to Know
QB Gio Lopez (passing leader): 140/207, 1947 yards, 17 TD, 1 INT.
RB Ty Clark III (rushing leader): 70 carries, 328 yards, 4 TD.
WR Carlos Hernandez (receiving leader): 49 catches, 720 yards, 4 TD.
On defense, LB Vincent Firenze leads with 49 tackles; DL Langston Hardy has 5.5 sacks; DL Dallas Afalava has 1 interception.
Injury news: we found no official availability report during an open week, so we're not listing any. Official reports return before the next game.
The Conference Picture
Wake Forest is 6-1 overall, 2-1 at home and 4-0 away. In ACC play the Demon Deacons are 4-1, which sorts them No. 2 of 17 by record. Miami sits on top at 4-0 in league games. Right around us: Miami (4-0) and SMU (3-1). The top of the table: Miami (4-0), Wake Forest (4-1), SMU (3-1). That order is a sort by record, not the official tiebreaker order. The Demon Deacons are No. 17 in the latest AP poll in our data. Every league game from here is a chance to move up, and the open week is when the plan for that climb gets built. An open date in late October is a chance to heal up and study the stretch run.
This Week: Open Date
No game for Wake Forest this week. The last time out, on Oct. 17, 2026, the Demon Deacons beat California on the road, 41-7. Next up: Saturday, Oct. 31, vs. Virginia, in Allegacy Financial Stadium, Winston-Salem, with a kickoff time to be announced. Virginia comes in at 4-3. After that, CFBD lists vs. Merrimack (Nov. 7), at SMU (Nov. 14), at Georgia Tech (Nov. 21), vs. Duke (Nov. 28). Until then: rest, film and a little extra time in the ice tub.
My Open-Week Take
Here's how I see it, friends. An open date isn't a day off; it's a deep breath. The coaches get to fix the little things, the players get their legs back, and we fans get a Saturday to call our families, clean the grill and argue happily about the depth chart. When the Demon Deacons come back, I'll be right there in the stands, same seat, same voice, and I'll bring you every sourced detail. Thanks for spending part of your open week with me. Roll the Quad!
