"Exit Light, Enter Stats": Ruthanne Dellinger Marches the Hokies Into Clemson

By Ruthanne Dellinger · Virginia Tech Insider

Meet Your Insider

Hey, Hokie Nation! I'm Ruthanne Dellinger, your Virginia Tech insider at The Cover Window. I grew up on a farm outside Blacksburg, and I was a drum major in the Corps of Cadets. I analyze defense like it's a lunch-pail job, because it is. I travel and live with this team, and I jump, audibly, every time our defense makes a stop. My producer has stopped apologizing for it.

Here's my promise. I've got mountain-girl spunk, but I don't stretch the truth. Every number in this report has a source. If I don't know something, I'll tell you straight. I celebrate our players as people first, I respect every opponent, and I thank God for country roads, crisp fall air and Hokie football. Exit light, enter stats.

The School in 60 Seconds

Virginia Tech has played football since 1892 and has won more than 700 games. The Hokies have appeared in 33 bowl games, including the 2000 BCS National Championship Game. They play in the ACC after previously competing in the Big East. Home is Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, with seating for more than 65,000. ESPN voted it No. 2 on its 2007 list of the "Top 20 Scariest Places to Play". CFBD lists 65,632 seats.

The last five seasons were a climb: 6-7, 3-8, 7-6, 6-7 and 3-9. That's why this 5-2 start has me jumping already.

The Coach and the Scheme

James Franklin is in his first season as head coach. CFBD lists his hire date as Nov. 17, 2025. He coached Vanderbilt from 2011 to 2013 and Penn State from 2014 until 2025. That's a lot of big Saturdays on his résumé.

His offense has come out swinging. Virginia Tech gains 451.3 yards per game (25th in FBS) and scores 37.1 points (23rd). The passing game ranks 11th at 301.6 yards per game. The Hokies hold the ball 32:12 per game (28th).

The defense is a lunch-pail crew against the run. It allows just 87.4 rushing yards per game, 10th in FBS. Opponents convert 32.6% of third downs (29th). The pass defense needs work, at 227.3 yards per game (95th). The Hokies allow 21.1 points per game (46th). One worry: Virginia Tech is -4 in turnover margin, 113th.

Players to Know

QB Ethan Grunkemeyer: 1,984 yards, 15 touchdowns, two interceptions, 72.6% completions. Against Georgia Tech he went 15 of 22 for 250 yards and three touchdowns, plus a rushing touchdown.
WR Que'Sean Brown: team-best 46 catches for 616 yards and three touchdowns. Against Georgia Tech he caught six passes for a career-high 182 yards, the sixth-most in a game in school history. He also had a 63-yard punt return. AP's preview prints his name as "Sean Brown".
RB Jeffrey Overton Jr.: 613 yards on 103 carries and four touchdowns. He caught a 26-yard touchdown against Georgia Tech.
K John Love: a 24-yard field goal against Georgia Tech.
Aycen Stevens: team-high seven sacks. I jump for every one of those.
Keon Wylie: team-high 37 tackles.

The Conference Picture

Virginia Tech is 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the ACC. The Hokies are 3-1 at home and 2-1 on the road. They started 4-0: 73-3 over VMI, 44-21 over Old Dominion, 35-26 at Maryland and 21-14 at Boston College. Then came two losses that came down to the final play, 35-33 to Pittsburgh and 25-20 at California. Last week they beat Georgia Tech 34-24.

AP calls the next stretch the hardest part of the season: three of the next four games are on the road, at Clemson, SMU and Miami. Stanford and Virginia visit Lane Stadium to close it out.

This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides

Virginia Tech (5-2) at Clemson (4-2) · Saturday, Oct. 24, 7:00 p.m. ET · Memorial Stadium, Clemson, S.C. · ESPN

Last time out. Virginia Tech beat Georgia Tech 34-24 on Oct. 17 after leading 24-3 at halftime. Clemson shut out FCS Charleston Southern 37-0 the same day.

Virginia Tech's offense vs. Clemson's defense. Clemson's pass defense is good, allowing 189.3 yards per game (39th). Its run defense allows 141.5 yards (70th). So Overton on the ground can open things up for Grunkemeyer and Brown. Clemson's defense held Charleston Southern to 0 of 11 on third down, but that was an FCS opponent. Ball security is a must: we're -4 in turnovers.

Clemson's offense vs. Virginia Tech's defense. Clemson gains 340.7 yards per game (110th) and scores 22.3 points (106th). Its third-down rate is 33.3% (116th). Tait Reynolds has 943 passing yards and one touchdown. Gideon Davidson has 430 rushing yards. Our 10th-ranked run defense should be ready. Our pass defense (95th) has to tighten up against Bryant Wesco Jr.

Series. Clemson leads the series 24-12-1 and has won seven straight since 2011, per TigerNet and Clemson's game notes. Clemson won 24-14 in Blacksburg in 2024. Those figures are thin, but the streak is real enough to sting.

Availability. No official conference availability report has been published. I found no confirmed Virginia Tech injury news.

Three questions that decide it:
1. Can Grunkemeyer keep his efficiency on the road?
2. Can the Hokies win the turnover battle after a -4 start?
3. Can our run defense make Clemson one-dimensional?

Local Flavor

It's a Saturday night in Clemson, 7 p.m. on ESPN. Clemson's team runs down the hill in its traditional game-day entrance, so expect noise. Wear maroon and orange, cheer with class, and say a prayer for safe travels. Not an ad. Exit light, enter stats.

My call: Clemson Tigers 27, Virginia Tech Hokies 24.
