"Pack the Rent": Jo Ferrante Brings Fast-Break Energy to Friday Night in East Hartford

By Jo Ferrante · UConn Insider

Meet Your Insider

What's up, Husky Nation. I'm Jo Ferrante, your UConn insider at The Cover Window. I'm from the Hartford area. I played point guard in college and coached high school quarterbacks after that, so I treat football like a fast break and I know every Husky by number. I count possessions like a basketball coach, because every one matters.

Here's the deal. I'm brash and competitive, and I take "nobody watches UConn football" very personally. I also keep it honest. Every stat I give you has a source, and if I don't know something, I'll say so. Next play, next possession. I celebrate these players as people first, I respect every opponent, and I'm grateful to God for a Friday night under the lights. Pack the Rent.

The School in 60 Seconds

UConn first fielded a team in 1896 and played in Division I-AA until 1999. The Huskies began moving to Division I-A in 2000 and became a full member in 2002. They played in the Big East and then the American from 2004 through 2019. In 2019 the program went independent, since the current Big East doesn't sponsor football. CFBD lists UConn as an FBS independent this season.

Home is Pratt & Whitney Stadium in East Hartford. CFBD lists it as built in 2003 with 40,000 seats. The recent climb is real: 1-11 in 2021, 6-7 in 2022, 3-9 in 2023, then 9-4 in both 2024 and 2025. Back-to-back nine-win seasons. Say it louder for the people in the back.

The Coach and the Scheme

Jason Candle is the new head coach. CFBD records his hire date as Dec. 6, 2025. He was head coach at Toledo from 2016 to 2025 and an assistant there from 2009. Before that he coached at Mount Union from 2003 to 2008, and he played wide receiver at Mount Union and Geneva.

His offense plays with pace. UConn gains 451.8 yards per game (24th in FBS) and scores 35.7 points (29th). It runs for 195.3 yards per game (33rd) and throws for 256.5 (43rd). In the 34-20 win at Temple, the Huskies scored four rushing touchdowns from four different players.

Now the honest part. The defense allows 407.5 yards per game (115th) and 290.5 passing yards per game (135th). Opponents convert 43.3% of third downs (113th). The run defense is much better, at 117.0 yards per game (39th). UConn also averages 79.0 penalty yards per game, 130th in FBS. That's like committing reach-in fouls on every possession. We have to clean it up.

Players to Know

QB Kalieb Osborne: 1,421 yards, 10 TD, 2 INT, 60.1% completions. At Temple he went 17 of 23 for 257 yards and ran for a 12-yard touchdown on the opening drive. That's a point guard pushing the ball.
RB Cyncir Bowers: 433 yards on 65 carries, six touchdowns. He ran 18 times for 84 yards at Temple and scored from 8 yards out to stretch the lead.
RB Trey Cornist: seven carries for 114 yards at Temple, including a 51-yard run and a 1-yard touchdown. Instant offense off the bench.
RB Kenji Christian: one carry at Temple, a 39-yard touchdown. Efficiency, people.
WR Shamar Porter: team-leading 235 receiving yards on 11 catches, two touchdowns. That's 21.4 yards a catch by my math.
WR Ryder Treadway: three catches for 63 yards at Temple.
LB K'Von Sherman: team-high 3.5 sacks.
LB Hayden Pegg: team-high 40 tackles.
K Jack O'Connor: field goals of 21 and 27 yards at Temple.

The Conference Picture

UConn is 3-3 and plays as an independent, so there's no conference race. The Huskies are 1-2 at home and 2-1 on the road. They beat Lafayette 56-7, then lost 38-14 to Maryland. They won 48-20 at Southern Miss and lost 24-21 at Miami (Ohio). Then came a 42-41 overtime loss to Syracuse and the 34-20 win at Temple.

Bowl eligibility is the goal, and the schedule after Friday runs at Air Force, then North Carolina, James Madison and Old Dominion at home, and a trip to Wyoming. Three of those last five are at the Rent. A home win now gets the Huskies back above.500.

This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides

UMass (4-3) at UConn (3-3) · Friday, Oct. 23, 7:00 p.m. ET · Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field, East Hartford, Conn. · CBS Sports Network

Last time out. UConn beat Temple 34-20 in Philadelphia on Oct. 10 and then had a bye. UMass lost 25-18 in overtime at Buffalo on Oct. 17.

UConn's offense vs. UMass' defense. This is a real test. UMass allows 307.9 yards per game (30th) and 19.1 points (33rd). Its pass defense ranks 30th and its run defense 45th. UMass is +7 in turnover margin (8th) and has two interception-return touchdowns. So Osborne has to protect the ball, and the run game has to keep UMass honest. More possessions, fewer turnovers.

UMass' offense vs. UConn's defense. UMass gains 339.1 yards per game (113th) and throws for 179.0 (117th). But William Watson III completes 74% of his passes, and our pass defense ranks 135th. T.Y. Harding leads the Minutemen with 28 catches. Our run defense (39th) should handle Elijah Faulkner and Curtis Kimmons IV. Logan Inagawa played quarterback at Buffalo, so we may see two looks.

Series. CFBD has UConn 4-2 against UMass from 2016 to 2025. CollegeFootballDigest lists UConn ahead 6-4 all-time, including a 47-42 UConn win in 2024. Treat that last bit as thin.

Availability. No official conference availability report has been published. I found no confirmed UConn injury news.

Three questions that decide it:
1. Can UConn's pass defense (135th) get off the field on third down?
2. Can Osborne avoid giving the ball to a +7 defense?
3. Can the Huskies cut their 79.0 penalty yards per game?

Abner, the UMass insider, will have a Revolutionary War pun ready. I'll have a box score ready.

Local Flavor

UConn is calling Friday "The Rent at Night," and it's the Huskies' Cancer Awareness game. Wear your support proudly, hug somebody who's been through the fight, and say a prayer for every family touched by it. Can't make it? The game is on the UConn Sports Network on FOX Sports 97.9 FM. Not an ad. Pack the Rent.

My call: UConn Huskies 33, Massachusetts Minutemen 20.
