Meet Your Insider
Hello, darlings! I'm Kensington Rhee, Kenzie to everyone who matters, and I'm your UCLA insider at The Cover Window. I'm a Westwood film-school producer, I storyboard every drive, and I travel and live with this team. Every game is a movie pitch to me. This season's logline? "First-year coach, unbeaten team, backup quarterback steps into the spotlight." Honestly, I'd greenlight it.
Here's my promise. Glam, yes. Fiction, never. Every number in this report has a source, like a properly cleared script. If I don't know something, I'll say it's still in development. I celebrate our players as people first, I respect every opponent, and I'm grateful to God for every sunny Saturday in Pasadena. And. scene.
The School in 60 Seconds
UCLA plays its home games at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. CFBD lists 88,565 seats. The Bruins now play in the Big Ten. UCLA has been ranked in the AP top 10 at least once in every decade since the poll began in the 1930s. Under Red Sanders in the 1950s, UCLA won the 1954 Coaches' Poll national championship and three conference titles. Under Terry Donahue in the 1980s and 1990s, the Bruins went 151-74-8 with an NCAA-record eight straight bowl wins.
The recent box office: 8-4, 9-4, 8-5, then 5-7 and 3-9. Which makes this season's 6-0 start the comeback story of the year.
The Coach and the Scheme
Bob Chesney is the first-year head coach. CFBD lists his hire date as Dec. 6, 2025. He's a Dickinson College graduate who has been head coach at Salve Regina, Assumption, Holy Cross and James Madison. At Holy Cross he won five straight Patriot League titles. Now he's the first UCLA coach to begin his tenure 6-0. That's a breakout debut.
The defense is the lead of the ensemble. UCLA allows 292.3 yards per game (20th in FBS) and 16.2 points (21st). The run defense allows 97.7 yards per game (20th). The third-down defense ranks 3rd in FBS. UCLA is +10 in turnover margin, 5th.
The offense runs the show on the ground: 231 rushing yards per game, 12th in FBS. It scores 35.5 points per game (33rd) and holds the ball 34:01 per game, 4th. The blooper reel: 83.2 penalty yards per game, 133rd. We'll fix that in the edit bay.
Players to Know
QB Nico Iamaleava: 982 yards, four touchdowns, four interceptions. He injured his leg at Oregon and missed the Wisconsin game. His status for Saturday is unknown.
QB Ty Dieffenbach: went 22 of 33 for 264 yards in his first start as a Bruin. He spent two seasons at Pitt and then played at Cal Poly before coming to UCLA. He said, "It's another game, not making the moment too big". Headliner quality.
RB Wayne Knight: 571 yards on 84 carries and 11 touchdowns. He has a rushing touchdown in all six games. A franchise player.
RB Anthony Woods: eight carries for 39 yards and a touchdown against Wisconsin.
WR Semaj Morgan: team-best 24 catches for 313 yards and two touchdowns. He caught five passes for 84 yards against Wisconsin.
Sammy Omosigho: team-high three sacks, plus the fourth-down stop against Wisconsin that was upheld on review.
Jalen Woods: team-high 50 tackles.
K Mateen Bhaghani: a 24-yard field goal against Wisconsin.
The Conference Picture
UCLA is 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten. The Bruins are No. 9 in the AP poll and No. 10 in the Coaches poll. That's 3-0 at home and 3-0 on the road. The wins: 45-24 at California, 28-10 over San Diego State, 52-38 over Purdue, 54-3 at Maryland, 17-15 at Oregon and 17-7 over Wisconsin. It's the program's first 6-0 start since 2022.
After Michigan State come Nevada at home, Minnesota on the road, Illinois at home, Michigan on the road and USC at home. Big finale energy.
This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides
Michigan State (2-5) at No. 9 UCLA (6-0) · Saturday, Oct. 24, 12:30 p.m. PT / 3:30 p.m. ET · Rose Bowl, Pasadena, Calif. · CBS
Last time out. UCLA beat Wisconsin 17-7 on Oct. 17 without Iamaleava. The opening drive went 16 plays and took 8:42, both season highs. Michigan State lost 24-21 to Northwestern the same day on a field goal with two seconds left.
UCLA's offense vs. MSU's defense. Michigan State allows 25.4 points per game (82nd) and 140.7 rushing yards (67th). AP ranks MSU's red-zone defense 135th. Knight's touchdown-every-game habit should get another episode. Whoever plays quarterback can rely on that ground game and our 34:01 possession average.
MSU's offense vs. UCLA's defense. MSU gains 310.7 yards per game (128th) and scores 21.3 points (113th). Alessio Milivojevic threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns against Northwestern. Our third-down defense (3rd) and +10 turnover margin are the plot twists MSU has to solve. One caution for our side: MSU is disciplined, at 36.3 penalty yards per game (7th), and we're 133rd.
Series. UCLA leads the all-time series 4-3, per both schools' history pages. Three of those meetings came in the Rose Bowl game: MSU won in 1954 and 1956, and UCLA won 14-12 in 1966. Those details could still change.
Availability. No official conference availability report has been published. Iamaleava's status is unknown after his leg injury.
Three questions that decide it:
1. Who starts at quarterback, Iamaleava or Dieffenbach?
2. Can Knight score a rushing touchdown for the seventh straight game?
3. Can UCLA cut down on its 83.2 penalty yards per game?
Shay, the Michigan State insider, frames every call like a softball pitch. I frame every play like a shot list. We'd make a great buddy comedy.

It's a 12:30 p.m. Pacific kickoff at the Rose Bowl on CBS. Bring sunscreen, a picnic blanket and your best blue and gold. Welcome the Spartans fans warmly; they flew a long way. I'll share confirmed tips before kickoff. Not an ad. And. scene.
My call: UCLA Bruins 32, Michigan State Spartans 17.
