"Let's Pivot to the Run Game": Iggy Yamamoto-Ross Ships the Cardinal's NC State Preview

By Ignatius 'Iggy' Yamamoto-Ross · Stanford Insider

Meet Your Insider

Hey, team! I'm Ignatius Yamamoto-Ross, Iggy for short, your Stanford insider at The Cover Window. I've founded three apps that failed and built one Cardinal model that works. I travel and live with this team, and I describe football in startup jargon. A two-minute drill is a sprint. A punt is a pivot. A blowout loss is a learning opportunity, and we've had a few.

Here's my mission statement. I disrupt hype, not facts. Every number in this report has a source. If I don't know something, I'll mark it "pending data." I celebrate our players as people first, I respect every opponent, and I'm grateful to God for a Friday night under the lights at home. Let's ship it.

The School in 60 Seconds

Stanford has fielded teams nearly every year since 1892. The school dropped football in favor of rugby from 1906 to 1917. Fun branding history: the teams were the "Cardinal," then mostly the "Cardinals," then the "Indians" from 1930 to 1972, then "Cardinals" again, and finally "Cardinal" since the 1982 season. A student vote in 1975 to become the "Robber Barons" wasn't approved. Best rejected rebrand ever.

Stanford now plays in the ACC after many years in the Pac-12. Home is Stanford Stadium, which CFBD lists as built in 2006 with 50,424 seats. The last five seasons were rough: four straight 3-9 years from 2021 to 2024, then 4-8 in 2025. This is a rebuild, and we're in the early funding rounds.

The Coach and the Scheme

Tavita Pritchard is the new head coach, hired for the 2026 season. CFBD records his hire date as Nov. 28, 2025. He's a Stanford alum and former quarterback. He played on the 2007 team that upset USC, widely considered one of the biggest upsets in college football history. He started coaching as a Stanford graduate assistant in 2010 and became offensive coordinator in 2018. From 2023 to 2025 he coached quarterbacks for the Washington Commanders. Founder returns to the company. Love that story.

The 2026 product is still in beta. Stanford gains 342.9 yards per game (106th) and scores 18.3 points (127th). The passing game is solid at 239.4 yards per game (59th). The run game sits at 103.4 yards (131st).

The defense needs a full refactor. It allows 452.0 yards per game (134th), 36.6 points (133rd) and 196.6 rushing yards (125th). Opponents convert 47.8% of third downs (131st) and score on 96.4% of red-zone trips (136th). On the bright side, Stanford's 2026 recruiting class ranks 37th, per CFBD. Pipeline matters.

Players to Know

QB Davis Warren: 1,630 yards, seven touchdowns, two interceptions, 60.3% completions. Against Elon he went 27 of 39 for 279 yards and a touchdown.
RB Micah Ford: 529 yards on 114 carries and eight touchdowns. Against Elon he ran 19 times for 179 yards and four touchdowns, including an 81-yard score. His four touchdowns tied Stanford's single-game record. He also scored three times against Hawai'i in the opener. That's product-market fit.
WR Caden High: team-best 21 catches for 337 yards and three touchdowns.
WR JonAnthony Hall: five catches for 70 yards against Elon.
WR Sedrick Irvin: a 27-yard touchdown catch against Elon.
Jay Green: team-high 43 tackles.
Gabe Kaminski: team-high two sacks.

The Conference Picture

Stanford is 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the ACC. The Cardinal are 3-1 at home and 0-3 on the road. The wins: 37-27 over Hawai'i, 34-27 over Georgia Tech and 34-7 over Elon. The losses: 45-6 to Miami, 35-7 at Duke, 57-3 at Wake Forest and 58-7 at Notre Dame.

The home splits are the key metric. All three wins came at Stanford Stadium, and Friday is home again. After that come Louisville, Virginia Tech and California on the road, then SMU at home.

This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides

NC State (3-3) at Stanford (3-4) · Friday, Oct. 23, 7:30 p.m. PT / 10:30 p.m. ET · Stanford Stadium, Stanford, Calif. · ESPN

Last time out. Stanford beat FCS Elon 34-7 on Oct. 17. Pritchard said he challenged the team at halftime after a flat first half. The Cardinal outscored Elon 34-7 from the second quarter on. NC State lost 38-14 to Wake Forest on Oct. 10 and then had a bye.

Stanford's offense vs. NC State's defense. Here's our growth opportunity. NC State's pass defense allows 230.3 yards per game (99th), and it allows 27.7 points (104th). Warren to High through the air, Ford on the ground. Wake Forest scored the game's final 31 points against NC State. Their coach said the defense lacked discipline in the second half.

NC State's offense vs. Stanford's defense. This is our biggest risk. NC State converts 51.1% of third downs (15th) and holds the ball 32:52 per game (20th). CJ Bailey has 1,507 passing yards, and Keenan Jackson has 400 receiving yards. Our third-down defense (131st) and red-zone defense (136th) need a big upgrade. One opening: NC State ran for only 15 yards against Wake Forest.

Series. NC State Athletics lists one meeting, a 59-28 NC State win in Raleigh on Nov. 2, 2024. First time in Palo Alto.

Availability. No official conference availability report has been published. I found no confirmed Stanford injury news.

Three questions that decide it:
1. Can Ford keep running like he did against Elon?
2. Can our defense get off the field on third down?
3. Can Stanford stay perfect at home?

Ruff, the NC State insider, explains football with grill thermometers. I explain it with pitch decks. Let's call it a partnership.

Local Flavor

It's a Friday night in Palo Alto, with the game starting at 7:30 p.m. Pacific. Bring a jacket, bring a friend and welcome the Wolfpack fans who flew across the country. I'll share confirmed pregame spots before kickoff. Not an ad. Let's pivot to the run game, and let's go Card.

My call: NC State Wolfpack 33, Stanford Cardinal 24.
