"Pull Up a Lawn Chair, Honey": Azalea Fairhope-Grice Rolls the Parade to Huntington

By Azalea Fairhope-Grice · South Alabama Insider

Meet Your Insider

Well, hey, y'all! I'm Azalea Fairhope-Grice, your South Alabama insider at The Cover Window. I'm a Mobile native and a Mardi Gras float-builder, and I coached high school volleyball long enough to keep a whistle in my purse. I still have it. I will use it.

Here's my promise. I'll bring Southern charm and a competitive streak in equal measure. You'll get real numbers, honest takes, and gracious words for every opponent, because Mama raised me right. You won't get made-up stats or rumors dressed up as news. If I don't know, I'll say, "Darlin', I'm still checking." Mobile is where Mardi Gras started in America, and our Jaguars bring that same parade energy to every game. This year, the parade has a run game. Pull up a lawn chair, honey.

The School in 60 Seconds

South Alabama started its football program in 2009 and joined the FBS in 2012 as a member of the Sun Belt Conference. That makes it one of the youngest programs in the country, and it has already had a 10-win season: 10-3 in 2022. Home is Hancock Whitney Stadium, which opened in 2020, and CFBD lists its capacity at 25,450.

The last five seasons: 5-7, 10-3, 7-6, 7-6 and 4-8. With the win at Arkansas State, the 2026 Jaguars already matched last season's four wins. Six games in, and the float's already decorated.

The Coach and the Scheme

Major Applewhite has been head coach since 2024. CFBD lists his hire date as Jan. 18, 2024. He was head coach at Houston in 2017 and 2018, after serving as the Cougars' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He has also coached at Texas, Syracuse, Rice and Alabama. As a player, he quarterbacked Texas from 1998 to 2001, sharing the job with Chris Simms.

The 2026 identity is clear: run the ball and protect it. South Alabama has 276 rushing attempts and just 151 passes. It averages 220.3 rushing yards per game (16th in FBS) and 4.79 yards per carry, and scores 38.8 points per game (15th). The Jaguars have only three giveaways against 11 takeaways. The defense is the work in progress, allowing 429.0 yards (126th) and 34.5 points (131st) per game.

Players to Know

RB Keenan Phillips: 444 yards on 80 carries, 5 TD. At Arkansas State he ran for 157 yards and three touchdowns and returned a kickoff 100 yards. Throw that man some beads.
RB PJ Martin: ran for 95 yards and a touchdown at Arkansas State. Phillips and Martin have combined for 867 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.
QB Jared Hollins: 855 passing yards, 7 TD, 2 INT, 60.9%. At Arkansas State he scored two short rushing touchdowns 21 seconds apart.
WR Brendan Jenkins: 21 catches, 355 yards, 3 TD.
S Cole Blaylock: a team-high 42 tackles, including 10 at Arkansas State per CFBD data.

The Conference Picture

South Alabama is 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Sun Belt. The Jaguars are 3-0 at home and 1-2 on the road, with road losses at Tulane (28-24) and Kentucky (45-21). They are not ranked. They lead the Sun Belt and rank sixth nationally in turnover margin, at +1.3 per game. A win in Huntington would make them 3-0 in league play, and I'd be on a float by Wednesday.

This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides

South Alabama (4-2) at Marshall (3-3) · Tuesday, Oct. 20, 7:30 p.m. ET (6:30 CT) · Joan C. Edwards Stadium, Huntington · ESPN2

Last time out. We won 56-49 at Arkansas State on Oct. 8, the highest-scoring FBS game of the season at the time. We ran 50 times for 296 yards, then put the game away with a 13-play drive that ate the rest of the clock. The win also snapped a two-game skid in that series. Marshall lost 27-21 to Coastal Carolina on Oct. 10 after the Chanticleers forced six turnovers.

South Alabama's offense vs. Marshall's defense. Our ground game against a run defense that allows 193.8 yards per game (123rd) and 5.54 yards per carry. Hand it to Keenan, hand it to PJ, repeat. Marshall allowing 43.6% third-down conversions (115th) suggests long drives are there for the taking. Marshall linebacker Javae Gilmore had 10 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss last time out, so he'll be busy.

Marshall's offense vs. South Alabama's defense. This is where I keep my whistle handy. Our pass defense allows 264.8 yards per game (127th). Marshall's Zion Turner threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns against Coastal, and Judah Price ran for 124 in his first start. Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw has 324 receiving yards. Our takeaways are the counterpunch, with 11 so far.

Series. South Alabama leads 1-0, from a 28-0 win in Mobile in 2023. This is the first meeting in Huntington.

Availability. No official conference availability report as of Oct. 18, 2026. I found no confirmed South Alabama injury news. Marshall's starting quarterback is unconfirmed in my sources.

Marshall is introducing its own insider this week, a nurse from Huntington. Bless her. She'll need her stethoscope when Keenan gets going. (Kindly meant!)

Three questions that decide it:
1. Can the Jaguars run it 40-plus times again?
2. Can our pass defense hold up against Marshall's 247.8 passing yards per game?
3. Can South Alabama keep its turnover magic on the road?

Local Flavor

I'll share Huntington eats once I've confirmed them. Pack a jacket; it's not Mobile up there. Not an ad.

My call: South Alabama Jaguars 34, Marshall Thundering Herd 32.
