"Footnote: I Was Right": Ezra Lindqvist Welcomes Rutgers to the New Ryan Field

By Ezra Lindqvist · Northwestern Insider

Meet Your Insider
Hello, Wildcats, and welcome to The Cover Window! I'm Ezra Lindqvist, your Northwestern insider. I'm a data journalist by training, which means I fact-check the coaches in real time. Politely. Mostly politely. I travel with this team and I live with this team, and I'm fully aware that I'm doing the "smartest kid in the Big Ten" bit. I footnote my own jokes¹, and then I footnote the footnotes². When we win, I publish a formal correction to everyone who doubted us. When we lose, I file a 2,000-word investigative piece on the punter. Every week you'll get the players, the coaches and the matchup, sourced and double-checked. My motto: "Footnote: I was right."
¹ This one. ² Also this one.

The School in 60 Seconds
The headline this season is home. Northwestern opened 2026 with two games at Martin Stadium, right on the shore of Lake Michigan, and then opened the brand-new Ryan Field against Penn State on Oct. 2. Northwestern won that one 34-13. Correction to my earlier draft: there was no earlier draft. Northwestern has won all four of its home games this season. The coach is David Braun, who became interim coach in 2023, was named the permanent head coach on Nov. 15 of that year and was the consensus Big Ten Coach of the Year. Footnote: that's a very good first season.

The Coach and the Scheme
Braun's start date in the coaching database is July 10, 2023. The 2026 numbers say Northwestern runs the ball and protects it. It runs on about 62% of its plays for 191.5 yards a game (39th in FBS), with 14 rushing touchdowns. It averages 33.5 points a game. And here's the headline stat: Northwestern has lost only two turnovers all season. Its plus-7 turnover margin ranks eighth in FBS. In the red zone the Wildcats score 96.4% of the time, fourth in FBS. The defense allows 17.0 points a game (26th), but 230.5 passing yards a game ranks 100th. Correction requested. Two more items for the record: the pass rush has 9 sacks, and the protection has allowed 14. Opponents average 4.27 yards a carry against us. I'm filing that under "areas for improvement," with a footnote noting how good everything else has been.

Players to Know
QB Aidan Chiles: 1,398 yards, 9 TD, 0 INT and 70.5% completions. Against Michigan State he went 18 of 27 for 226 yards and ran for a touchdown.
RB Caleb Komolafe: 401 yards and 4 TD on 75 carries. Against MSU: 67 rushing yards, a touchdown and four catches for 51 yards.
WR Griffin Wilde: 30 catches, 482 yards, 3 TD.
K Jackson Kleather: three field goals against Michigan State, including the 34-yard winner with two seconds left.
Matthew Smith: blocked a Michigan State field-goal try late.

The Conference Picture
Northwestern is 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten, 4-0 at home and 1-1 on the road. The Wildcats are No. 24 in the AP poll and No. 23 in the Coaches Poll. The only loss was 29-23 at Indiana. Next week is a trip to Oregon, so footnote this: winning this week matters. Holding serve at home before going to Eugene puts Northwestern in good shape for the second half of the season. Data journalism suggests momentum is mostly a myth. Data journalism has never been to a Northwestern pep rally.

This Week: Rutgers (2-4) at No. 24 Northwestern (5-1)
Saturday, Oct. 24 · 11 a.m. CT (noon ET) · Ryan Field, Evanston · Peacock.
Last week: Northwestern won 24-21 at Michigan State. Rutgers came back from 23-13 down at halftime to win 37-30 at Maryland.
Our offense vs. their defense: Rutgers allows 185.2 rushing yards a game (118th) and 31.8 points (119th). Our run game should have room.
Their offense vs. our defense: Rutgers throws for 265.8 yards a game, and our pass defense ranks 100th. WR K.J. Duff has 741 yards and 9 TDs. That's the matchup I'd circle, and I'd footnote it too.
Series: a full series record wasn't in a free source I could verify. I won't guess. You knew that.
One more set of numbers for the notebook: this team has 9 sacks and has allowed 14, with 9 takeaways against 2 giveaways, and it has 14 rushing and 9 passing touchdowns.
Availability: I found no official availability report for either team as of Oct. 18, 2026.
What decides it: (1) Can our run game control the clock? (2) Can our secondary keep up with Duff? (3) Turnovers. We're plus-7, Rutgers is minus-5. One fact for balance: Rutgers is the least penalized team in FBS.
And to Vinny Scolari, Rutgers's insider: a warm Evanston welcome. I've prepared directions from Exit 9. They are 47 footnotes long.

Local Flavor (unsponsored, not an ad)
Watching in Evanston? Le Peep on Church Street for a game-day breakfast. Footnote: the pancakes are excellent.

My call: Northwestern Wildcats 38, Rutgers Scarlet Knights 20.
