Meet Your Insider
¡Buenas noches, Aggies! I'm Esperanza Lujan-Tafoya, your New Mexico State insider at The Cover Window. I'm a Las Cruces native, a chile farmer's daughter and an ag-science grad. That means I can tell you the soil pH of the practice field and how much Scoville heat a fourth-down stop packs. (A lot. A fourth-down stop is Christmas-style, red and green.)
Everything gets a chile rating from me. A routine first down? Mild. A 40-yard run? Hatch hot. But I don't heat up the facts. Every number I give you is real and sourced. Every opponent gets respect. If I don't know something, I'll say so, and then I'll go find out. In the Mesilla Valley, fall smells like roasting chile and fresh-cut grass. Our Aggies play with that same heat, and the Organ Mountains watch every snap.
The School in 60 Seconds
New Mexico State plays FBS football in Conference USA. The road here was winding. The Aggies were independent in 2013, a football-only Sun Belt member from 2014 to 2017, and independent again from 2018. They announced in November 2021 that they would join Conference USA in all sports starting in 2023. Home is Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces, which CFBD lists as built in 1978 with a capacity of 28,853.
Here's the honest part: Wikipedia notes that NMSU has one of the longest AP poll droughts in FBS, with its last ranking in 1960. The recent highs are real, though. The Aggies went 10-5 in 2023. The last five seasons: 2-10, 7-6, 10-5, 3-9 and 4-8.
The Coach and the Scheme
Tony Sanchez is the head coach. CFBD lists his hire date as Dec. 23, 2023. He's an NMSU alum and a former Aggie wide receiver. He was head coach at UNLV from 2014 to 2019, and before that at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas.
The 2026 numbers say run first. NMSU averages 142.7 rushing yards per game at 4.53 yards per carry, plus 230.5 passing yards. Scoring is 23.7 points per game (97th). The defense is sturdier against the run. It allows 125.5 rushing yards (47th) and 3.50 yards per carry, and it has 15 sacks. The red-pepper warnings: a -5 turnover margin (122nd), 92.9% red-zone scoring allowed (118th), and a 27:08 time of possession (127th).
Players to Know
RB James Jones: 599 yards on 92 carries, 3 TD. He entered the FIU game leading Conference USA at 102.0 rushing yards per game, then ran for 89 there. Chile rating: Hatch hot.
QB Trey Hedden: the season passing leader, at 906 yards, 5 TD, 6 INT, 52.4%. He started the first four games.
QB Adam Damante: started at FIU, going 9 of 22 for 104 yards with an interception. Wednesday's starter isn't confirmed in my sources.
WR Tyler "TK" King: 20 catches, 286 yards, 3 TD. Terrione Graves caught two passes for 39 yards at FIU.
DE Gabe Peterson: 4.5 sacks. S Nick Session: a team-high 50 tackles.
The Conference Picture
New Mexico State is 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA. The Aggies are 2-1 at home and 0-3 on the road. They are not ranked. The highlight so far is a 34-13 win over Western Kentucky, the same WKU team that beat Sam Houston 16-3 last week. A road win Wednesday would make NMSU 2-1 in the league and earn its first road win of 2026.
This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides
New Mexico State (2-4) at Sam Houston (1-5) · Wednesday, Oct. 21, 8:00 p.m. ET · Elliott T. Bowers Stadium, Huntsville, Texas · ESPN2
Last time out. FIU beat us 22-3 in Miami on Oct. 7. Their kicker made five field goals, and we threw two interceptions. Sam Houston lost 16-3 to Western Kentucky on Oct. 14 and managed just 177 total yards. Both teams have had a week to cool off. Time to fire up the roaster again.
NMSU's offense vs. Sam Houston's defense. This is the matchup I'm roasting over an open flame. The Bearkats allow 200.3 rushing yards per game (129th). Jones against that front is my top storyline. Sam Houston's pass defense, though, allows just 137.8 yards per game (4th in FBS), so I expect the Aggies to stay on the ground. One more thing: the Bearkats hold opponents to 32.1% on third down (24th). Staying ahead of the chains is the key.
Sam Houston's offense vs. NMSU's defense. Landyn Locke has 1,418 passing yards and 11 touchdowns in Phil Longo's offense, which Wikipedia calls air raid. The Bearkats run for just 95.0 yards per game (134th), so they'll lean on Locke. Our pass defense allows 222.3 yards per game (90th), and our 15 sacks are the answer. Peterson needs a big night.
Series. New Mexico State leads 2-1, per a search summary of school records: NMSU won 27-13 in 2023, Sam Houston won 31-11 in 2024, and NMSU won 37-10 on Oct. 2, 2025. I'm marking that thin until I confirm it on the media guide.
Availability. No official conference availability report as of Oct. 18, 2026. Our quarterback situation is unconfirmed: Hedden started four games and Damante started the last one. I found no other confirmed injury news.
Sam Houston debuts a storyteller insider this week too, a history teacher. I'll bring the green chile stew if he brings the campfire.
Three questions that decide it:
1. Can Jones and the run game feast on a defense allowing 200.3 rushing yards a game?
2. Can the Aggies stop giving the ball away (-5 margin)?
3. Can our defense pressure Locke into mistakes?
Local Flavor
I'm not naming Huntsville spots I haven't checked. I'm packing my own chile, thanks. Not an ad.
My call: New Mexico State Aggies 24, Sam Houston Bearkats 23.
