"Pack a Snack": Clementine Bilyeu Floats the Bears to Newark

By Clementine Bilyeu · Missouri State Insider

Meet Your Insider

Howdy from the Ozarks! I'm Clementine Bilyeu, your Missouri State insider here at The Cover Window. I'm a Springfield native and a float-trip guide, and I've been maroon since the day I was born. Mama swears my first word was "Bears." It was probably "boat," but I've chosen my story and I'm sticking with it.

I take a practical view of football, the same way I take a river. Read the current, respect the rocks, and keep everybody in the canoe. Missouri State is on a brand-new ride as an FBS program, and I'm thrilled to be your guide. I'll give you real numbers, honest takes, and kind words for every opponent. If I don't know something, I'll tell you, and then I'll paddle off and find out. Springfield is the heart of the Ozarks, and our Bears are taking the whole region along. Pack a snack. It's going to be a fun float.

The School in 60 Seconds

Missouri State University is in Springfield, Missouri, and its first football team took the field in 1909. Until 2005, the school was known as Southwest Missouri State. The Bears were a founding member of the Gateway Football Conference in 1985, which later became the Missouri Valley Football Conference. They joined Conference USA in 2025 and became a full FBS member in 2026. Wikipedia lists an all-time record of 492-532-39 and 10 conference championships.

Home is Plaster Sports Complex, which CFBD lists with a capacity of 17,337 and a 1941 construction year. The last five seasons: 8-4, 5-6, 4-7, 8-4 and 7-6.

The Coach and the Scheme

Casey Woods is in his first season as head coach. CFBD lists his hire date as Dec. 19, 2025. He was previously offensive coordinator at SMU and played wide receiver at Tennessee.

The 2026 offense is fairly balanced, with 202 rushing attempts and 183 pass attempts. It averages 359.5 yards per game, 224.7 passing and 134.8 rushing, and scores 22.2 points per game. Yards per carry sits at 4.00. The defense is the stretch of river with rocks in it. It allows 430.8 yards (127th in FBS) and 30.5 points per game (116th). The Bears have seven sacks, seven giveaways and six takeaways. Penalties have been a drag, at 394 yards in six games.

Players to Know

QB Henry Belin IV: threw for a career-high 300 yards on 28 of 39 against Kennesaw State, with two touchdowns. He also ran nine times for 24 yards.
QB Skyler Locklear: the season passing leader, at 788 yards, 4 TD, 2 INT, 65.7%. AP's preview doesn't say who will start Tuesday, so I'm calling the starter unconfirmed.
WR Isaiah Myers: 27 catches, 554 yards, 5 TD. He had seven catches for 135 yards and both touchdowns against KSU, tying the game twice in the second half. That boy can run a rapid.
Rushing leader: conflicting. AP lists Jambres Dubar (233 yards on 42 carries, 2 TD), and ESPN lists Ramone Green Jr. (227 yards on 51 carries, 2 TD). Connor Lair carried 14 times for 65 yards against KSU.
LB Jared Lloyd: a team-high 71 tackles.
K Yousef Obeid: made the 20-yard game-winner as time expired, plus two earlier field goals.

The Conference Picture

Missouri State is 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA. The Bears are 2-1 at home and 0-3 on the road. They are not ranked. The Kennesaw State win was their first FBS victory under Woods. Their earlier win came over FCS member Lindenwood. Their losses were at Texas A&M, to Marshall at home (30-24), at SMU (34-24) and at Western Kentucky (34-13). A road win in Newark would make them 2-1 in league play, and I'd like that very much.

This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides

Missouri State (2-4) at Delaware (2-4) · Tuesday, Oct. 20, 7:00 p.m. ET · Delaware Stadium, Newark · ESPNU

Last time out. The Bears beat Kennesaw State 24-21 on Oct. 14. After taking over with 6:06 left, they marched to set up Obeid's field goal as time expired. Delaware lost 33-30 at Middle Tennessee on Oct. 13, giving up a 93-yard drive in the final minutes.

Missouri State's offense vs. Delaware's defense. I like this current. Delaware allows 259.2 passing yards per game (125th), and our passing game just put up 300 yards. Myers against that secondary is my top storyline. The Blue Hens do have 18 sacks, with Blake Matthews at 4.5, so protection comes first. We'd also like to finish better in the red zone, where we rank 106th, scoring on 80.0% of trips.

Delaware's offense vs. Missouri State's defense. The Blue Hens throw for 271.0 yards per game (29th) but run for just 94.0 (135th). Our pass defense allows 254.3 yards per game (120th), so slowing Sean Wilson (339 yards, 3 TD) is the job. Delaware's quarterback situation is uncertain. Nick Minicucci missed his second straight game on Oct. 13, and Tyler Bell threw for 306 yards in his place. Stopping third downs would help too, since opponents convert 44.4% against us.

Series. I found no meeting between these two programs in CFBD's 2016-2025 list of most frequent opponents, and I haven't confirmed the all-time series. Not found, so not stated.

Availability. No official conference availability report as of Oct. 18, 2026. I found no confirmed Missouri State injury news. Delaware's Minicucci missed the Oct. 13 game, and his Tuesday status is unknown.

Delaware is debuting a librarian insider this week. I promise to return my books on time if she promises to be gentle with us.

Three questions that decide it:
1. Can Myers keep rolling against a pass defense ranked 125th?
2. Can the Bears' defense get off the field on third down?
3. Can Missouri State win its first road game of the season?

Local Flavor

I'm not recommending Newark spots I haven't checked. Bring a thermos and a smile. Not an ad.

My call: Delaware Blue Hens 29, Missouri State Bears 24.
