"Sit With Us": Opal Stonebriar Packs a Cooler for Miami

By Opal Stonebriar · Middle Tennessee Insider

Meet Your Insider

Well, hey there, sugar. Come in, sit down, and have a biscuit. I'm Opal Stonebriar, your Middle Tennessee insider here at The Cover Window. I'm a Rutherford County girl and a church choir director, raised on Friday-night lights and Saturday Blue Raiders. Folks call me the front-row grandma of Murfreesboro. I'm 34. It's a spiritual title.

Here's how this works. I will feed you, I will love on these boys like they're my own, and if you say something about my team that isn't true, I will correct you sweetly and with a citation. I don't make up numbers, I don't make up injuries, and when I don't know something I'll say, "Honey, I don't know yet." Murfreesboro is a city that grew up fast, and so did our program. Come sit with us, and you'll leave a Blue Raider. I promise.

The School in 60 Seconds

Middle Tennessee plays FBS football in Conference USA, out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The Blue Raiders have played in 14 bowl games and seven I-AA playoffs. Home is Johnny "Red" Floyd Stadium, which opened in 1933. The sources disagree on its size. CFBD lists a capacity of 30,788, and Wikipedia lists 27,303. I'm noting both until I check the media guide.

The last five seasons have been a climb and then a dip: 7-6 in 2021, 8-5 in 2022, 4-8 in 2023, and 3-9 in both 2024 and 2025. So a 3-3 start in 2026 already beats last year's win total by midseason, and in my kitchen that calls for a pound cake.

The Coach and the Scheme

Derek Mason was hired on Dec. 6, 2023, as the 15th head coach in program history. Before Murfreesboro, he was head coach at Vanderbilt from 2014 to 2020. This is his third season.

Here's what the 2026 numbers show. The offense averages 22.8 points per game, with 200.7 passing yards and 120.8 rushing yards per game. It runs efficiently, at 4.74 yards per carry, and it takes care of the football: only four giveaways all season, against eight takeaways. Defense is the worry. Opponents average 28.3 points per game and 5.21 yards per carry. FOX Sports lists the Blue Raiders' 11 tackles for loss as the second-fewest in FBS. That's not a scheme label, just the numbers.

Players to Know

QB Roman Gagliano: 110 of 188, 1,204 yards, 11 TD, just 2 INT. Against Delaware he threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns, ran for another, and led the game-winning 93-yard drive. Sweet as tea and twice as cool.
RB Antonio Martin Jr.: 433 yards on 83 carries, 1 TD.
WR Cam'ron Lacy: 35 catches, 369 yards, 4 TD.
WR Neo Clifton and WR Koraun Perdue: against Delaware, Clifton caught four passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns, including the winner. Perdue caught four for 103 yards and an 80-yard score.
LB Korey Smith: leads the team in tackles. ESPN lists 56 and FOX lists 55, so the count is conflicting by one.
Sacks: the sources disagree on the team leader. ESPN lists Kaven Call (1), while FOX and Sports-Reference list Ashton Taylor (2 per FOX, 1 per Sports-Reference). Conflicting, so I'm showing all of it.

The Conference Picture

Middle Tennessee is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA. The Blue Raiders are 3-0 at home and 0-3 on the road, with road losses at Marshall (28-26), Jax State (23-13) and Kansas (55-0). They are not ranked. A road win Tuesday would put them over.500 in the league and break that road skid. That's a big "if," and a beautiful one.

This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides

Middle Tennessee (3-3) at FIU (3-3) · Tuesday, Oct. 20, 7:00 p.m. ET · Pitbull Stadium, Miami · CBS Sports Network

Last time out. We rallied! Down 30-26 in the fourth quarter against Delaware on Oct. 13, Gagliano led a 10-play, 93-yard drive and hit Clifton for a 14-yard touchdown with 3:06 left. Final: 33-30. FIU lost 27-24 at Jax State that same night on a field goal with 44 seconds left.

MTSU's offense vs. FIU's defense. I won't sugarcoat it: this FIU defense is stingy. The Panthers allow 14.7 points, 166.0 passing yards and 100.0 rushing yards per game. DeeJay Holmes Jr. has five sacks and six tackles for loss. Our answer is protecting the football. Gagliano's two interceptions in 188 attempts mean FIU will have to earn every stop.

FIU's offense vs. MTSU's defense. FIU scores 19.7 points per game and averages 3.36 yards per carry. JJ Kohl has 1,458 passing yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions, and Maguire Anderson has 534 receiving yards. Our defense allows 216.5 passing yards per game, so keeping Anderson in front of us matters. FIU has also turned it over nine times, and our defense has eight takeaways.

Series. Middle Tennessee leads the all-time series 14-7. From 2016 to 2025, CFBD shows us winning seven of 10. I'll be honest, though: FIU won the last two, 35-24 in 2024 and 56-30 in Murfreesboro in 2025. Bless it. We remember.

Availability. No official conference availability report for this game as of Oct. 18, 2026. I found no confirmed injury news for either team in these sources, so I'm treating every status as unknown until game notes are released.

FIU is introducing its own insider this week, and I've heard she makes a mean cafecito. I'll bring the biscuits, and we'll call it even.

Three questions that decide it:
1. Can Gagliano keep his turnover-free ways against a defense allowing 14.7 points a game?
2. Can our run defense, at 5.21 yards per carry allowed, keep FIU off schedule?
3. Can we finally win on the road after an 0-3 start away from home?

Local Flavor

I'm not naming spots until I can confirm them. Pack a cooler for the drive, sugar. Not an ad.

My call: Florida International Panthers 28, Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 16.
