"It's All About the U, Baby": Javi 'The Breeze' Castillo Welcomes Pitt to Hard Rock

By Javi 'The Breeze' Castillo · Miami Insider

Meet Your Insider
¡Qué tal, Canes! Welcome to The Cover Window! I'm Javi Castillo, but you can call me The Breeze. I played defensive back at The U back in the day, and now I scout in linen and sunglasses, rain or shine. I travel with this team and I live with this team. My thing is bilingual hype one-liners that always rhyme. "Mensah lets it fly, adiós, goodbye!" I'm working on them. Every week you'll get the players, the coaches and the matchup, smooth as an ocean breeze. When we win, I throw up the "U" with my arms and shout "Swag!" When we lose, I put my sunglasses on indoors and say nothing. Very loudly. My motto never changes: "It's all about the U, baby."

The School in 60 Seconds
Miami owns five national championships: 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 2001. Last season the Canes made it all the way to the national championship game, losing 27-21 to Indiana at Hard Rock Stadium on Jan. 19, 2026. Hard Rock is listed at 64,767. This year the Canes are No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches polls. Miami is the only FBS team that has scored at least 30 points in every game this season. Sí, señor.

The Coach and the Scheme
Mario Cristobal was hired on Dec. 6, 2021. The 2026 numbers are ridiculous, in the best way. Miami scores 48.5 points a game, the most in FBS, and averages 559.5 yards a game, second in FBS. It throws for 333.0 yards a game (third) and runs for 226.5 (13th), at 6.09 yards a carry. On defense, the Canes allow just 14.0 points a game (seventh) and 58.5 rushing yards a game (second). They have 18 sacks and have allowed only 6. They hold the ball for an average of 33:58 a game, sixth in FBS. Miami converts 51.6% of its third downs (12th in FBS), and its red-zone defense ranks sixth, with opponents scoring on 66.7% of trips. The Canes are plus-4 in turnover margin. Smooth like the breeze. The one spot to watch: the pass defense allows 223.3 yards a game, 91st.

Players to Know
QB Darian Mensah: 1,764 yards, 18 TD and just 1 INT, completing 80.8% of his passes. That's fourth in FBS in touchdown passes. Against Florida State he went 23 of 34 for 326 yards and three touchdowns.
WR Malachi Toney: 50 catches for 758 yards and 8 TD, fourth in FBS in receiving yards. He had 11 catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns against the Seminoles.
RB Javian Mallory: 397 yards and 5 TD on 52 carries. Against FSU: 13 carries, 108 yards, two scores.
LB Mohamed Toure: a team-high 30 tackles, including 12 against Florida State.

The Conference Picture
Miami is 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the ACC, 3-0 at home and 3-0 on the road. The Canes are No. 1 in the AP and Coaches polls. They're one of six unbeaten teams in FBS. Road wins at Stanford, Wake Forest and Clemson (41-13) show this team travels well. Next up is a trip to North Carolina.

This Week: Pittsburgh (5-2) at No. 1 Miami (6-0)
Saturday, Oct. 24 · Noon ET · Hard Rock Stadium · ESPN. Forecast: 80 degrees, a 44% chance of storms and an 18 mph northeast wind. Typical South Florida, mi gente.
Last week: Miami beat Florida State 43-35. Pitt lost 27-21 at Boston College.
Our offense vs. their defense: Pitt has the best run defense in FBS, allowing 57.3 yards a game. But its pass defense ranks 115th at 249.0 yards a game. Mensah to Toney, baby. "The ball's in the air, Toney's there!"
Their offense vs. our defense: Pitt lost starting QB Mason Heintschel for the season to a torn ACL. Corey Dailey started at BC and went 11 of 25 with two interceptions, and Narduzzi hasn't named a starter for this game. WR Cataurus Hicks is a big-play threat, with 135 yards last week.
Series: Miami leads 30-12-1.
One more set of numbers for the notebook: this team has 18 sacks and has allowed 6, with 8 takeaways against 4 giveaways, and it has 17 rushing and 21 passing touchdowns.
Availability: one unofficial site reports LB Max Buchanan out after knee surgery. I could not confirm that from an official source, so treat it as unconfirmed. I found no official availability report for either team as of Oct. 18, 2026.
What decides it: (1) Can Pitt's run defense slow down our ground game? It's the best in the country against the run. (2) Can our defense take advantage of a new Pitt quarterback? (3) Weather. Storms could slow both offenses.
And to Yinz Bertolucci, Pitt's insider: much respect, hermano. Enjoy the sunshine. And grab some cafecito, it's on me.

My call: Miami Hurricanes 37, Pittsburgh Panthers 18.
