Meet Your Insider
Crack it open: Old Bay on that stat! I'm Abigail 'Abby' Chesapeake, and I'm your Maryland insider here at The Cover Window. The short version: I'm a dC-suburb lobbyist type who networks with every coordinator and cracks crabs on air. I follow this team from the stands, every week, and I love it out loud. Fair warning about my habit: old Bay is her universal answer to every problem. On the podcast, my segment is called Old Bay Index. The show card describes it like this: seasons each stat to taste. My rules are simple. I keep it clean and kind, I celebrate players as people, I respect every opponent, and I never invent a stat, a quote or a fact. If I can't source it, you won't hear it from me. This week the Terrapins have an open date, so instead of a game preview you get the full tour: the school, the coach, the players, the league and what's next.
The School in 60 Seconds
Home is SECU Stadium in College Park, MD, built in 1950 with a listed capacity of 51,802. The fight song is "Maryland Victory Song; Maryland Fight Song (Played after scoring a touchdown)", per Wikipedia. The band is the Mighty Sound of Maryland, per Wikipedia. The program claims national titles from 1953, per Wikipedia. The last five seasons went 7-6, 8-5, 8-5, 4-8 and 4-8, from 2021 through 2025. The most frequent opponents from 2016 through 2025 tell you who matters around here: Indiana (4-6 in 10 meetings), Rutgers (6-4 in 10 meetings), Penn State (1-8 in 9 meetings), Michigan State (3-6 in 9 meetings). That's a list of games, not an official rivalry list. The 2026 recruiting class ranked No. 43 nationally in CFBD's team rankings. And if you visit, ask somebody about Testudo; it's the tradition I'd show you first.
The Coach and the Scheme
Mike Locksley leads the Terrapins; CollegeFootballData dates the hire to Dec. 4, 2018. Through 7 games, Maryland scores 28.3 points a game and allows 33.3. By our math from CFBD figures, the offense runs on about 43% of its plays, gaining 133.0 rushing yards and 244.7 passing yards a game. That's a team that wants to throw it around. On third down, Maryland converts 33.7% of the time and opponents convert 42.4%. The defense has 17 sacks and 36 tackles for loss, and the turnover ledger reads 7 giveaways against 10 takeaways. Penalties cost 63.6 yards a game. The high-water mark so far was 62 points against Hampton on Sept. 6, 2026, and 1 of the 7 games was decided by eight points or fewer. Over the season, opponents have outscored Maryland by a combined 35 points. Every one of those numbers is a little homework for the open week.
Players to Know
QB Malik Washington (passing leader): 155/261, 1615 yards, 9 TD, 6 INT.
RB DeJuan Williams (rushing leader): 38 carries, 281 yards, 3 TD.
WR Chris Durr Jr. (receiving leader): 52 catches, 580 yards, 4 TD.
On defense, LB Daniel Wingate leads with 44 tackles; LB Zion Elee has 3.5 sacks; DB Jamare Glasker has 2 interceptions.
Injury news: we found no official availability report during an open week, so we're not listing any. Official reports return before the next game.
The Conference Picture
Maryland is 2-5 overall, 1-3 at home and 1-2 away. In Big Ten play the Terrapins are 0-4, which sorts them No. 17 of 18 by record. Ohio State sits on top at 4-0 in league games. Right around us: Penn State (0-4) and Michigan State (0-4). The top of the table: Ohio State (4-0), UCLA (4-0), Indiana (3-1). That order is a sort by record, not the official tiebreaker order. Every league game from here is a chance to move up, and the open week is when the plan for that climb gets built. An open date in late October is a chance to heal up and study the stretch run.
This Week: Open Date
No game for Maryland this week. The last time out, on Oct. 17, 2026, the Terrapins lost to Rutgers at home, 37-30. Next up: Saturday, Oct. 31, vs. Illinois, in SECU Stadium, College Park, with a kickoff time to be announced. Illinois comes in at 3-3. After that, CFBD lists at Purdue (Nov. 7), vs. Wisconsin (Nov. 14), at USC (Nov. 21), vs. Penn State (Nov. 28). Until then: rest, film and a little extra time in the ice tub.
My Open-Week Take
Here's how I see it, friends. An open date isn't a day off; it's a deep breath. The coaches get to fix the little things, the players get their legs back, and we fans get a Saturday to call our families, clean the grill and argue happily about the depth chart. When the Terrapins come back, I'll be right there in the stands, same seat, same voice, and I'll bring you every sourced detail. Thanks for spending part of your open week with me.
