"We Are": Mercy Holderby Welcomes You to a Rare Tuesday Night at The Joan

By Mercy Holderby · Marshall Insider

Meet Your Insider

Hi, friends. I'm Mercy Holderby, your Marshall insider at The Cover Window. I'm a Huntington native and a nurse, and I'm the daughter of two Marshall grads. I grew up hearing the story of this program's rebirth at our kitchen table. Some families pass down recipes. Mine passed down a chant.

You'll get two things from me every week. First, tenderness. I love these young men, win or lose, and I'll always talk about them as people first. Second, toughness. I'll tell you the truth about what the numbers say, even when it stings, and I'll never invent a fact to make us feel better. If I don't know, I'll say so. And yes, I'll be the loudest "We Are" in any room. In Huntington, those words mean more than a cheer. They're a promise passed down by families like mine, and every Saturday (and this week, every Tuesday) we keep it.

The School in 60 Seconds

Marshall plays in the Sun Belt Conference East Division at the FBS level. Home is Joan C. Edwards Stadium, which opened in 1991 with a 24-23 win over New Hampshire in front of 33,116 fans. The record crowd is 41,382, set against West Virginia on Sept. 10, 2010. Capacity is listed two ways: Wikipedia says 38,227 and CFBD says 38,016. It's one of two Division I stadiums named for a woman, and through the 2024 season Marshall was 192-45 there.

Marshall's first organized game against another college was a 15-0 win over Shelton College on Nov. 24, 1903. The 2014 team went 13-1 and finished No. 23 in the final AP poll. The last five seasons: 7-6, 9-4, 6-7, 10-3 and 5-7.

The Coach and the Scheme

Tony Gibson is in his second season, with an 8-10 record at Marshall. CFBD lists his hire date as Dec. 8, 2024. He's a 1994 Glenville State graduate, and he was previously defensive coordinator at West Virginia and NC State.

The 2026 numbers are honest and a little hard to read. On offense, Marshall averages 406.5 yards per game, with 247.8 passing and 158.7 rushing, at 4.43 yards per carry. The trouble is turnovers. The Herd has 14 giveaways and five takeaways, a -9 margin that ranks 136th in FBS. The defense allows 447.3 yards per game (132nd) and 33.7 points (129th). Opponents average 5.54 yards per carry, and Marshall has only five sacks.

Players to Know

QB Carlos Del Rio-Wilson: the season passing leader, at 1,014 yards, 6 TD, 5 INT, 64.0%. (ESPN lists 1,041 yards, so the figure is conflicting.) CollegeFootballDigest's CFBD data shows him 2 of 6 for 37 yards with three interceptions against Coastal.
QB Zion Turner: led Marshall against Coastal Carolina with 219 yards on 18 of 27 and two touchdowns. Tuesday's starter isn't confirmed in my sources.
RB Judah Price: made his first college start against Coastal and ran for 124 yards on 12 carries, with a touchdown run and a touchdown catch. That included a 50-yard scoring run.
RB Joshon Barbie: the season rushing leader, with 230 yards on 49 carries, 2 TD.
WR Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw: 22 catches, 324 yards, 4 TD.
LB Javae Gilmore: 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a deflection that led to an interception, and a blocked field goal against Coastal. DB Caleb Clark-Glover: a team-high 44 tackles.

The Conference Picture

Marshall is 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the Sun Belt. The Herd is 2-1 at home and 1-2 on the road. It is not ranked. After a 3-1 start, Marshall lost at James Madison (45-17) and at home to Coastal Carolina (27-21). Tuesday is the Herd's first crossover game against a West Division opponent this season, and a win would be its first Sun Belt win of 2026.

This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides

South Alabama (4-2) at Marshall (3-3) · Tuesday, Oct. 20, 7:30 p.m. ET · Joan C. Edwards Stadium, Huntington · ESPN2 per Marshall and the Sun Belt (the game notes list ESPN+, a conflict)

Why it's special. It's only the fifth regular-season Tuesday home game in Marshall history. The Herd is 3-1 in Tuesday home games, and the last regular-season one was a 37-23 win over Houston in 2008. Players will wear helmet decals honoring West Virginia's coal miners. That one gets me right here.

Last time out. Coastal Carolina forced six turnovers and led 27-0 early in the third quarter. Marshall then scored three touchdowns before losing 27-21. South Alabama beat Arkansas State 56-49, the highest-scoring FBS game of the season to that point.

Marshall's offense vs. South Alabama's defense. There's real opportunity here. The Jaguars allow 429.0 yards (126th), 264.8 passing (127th) and 34.5 points per game (131st). Opponents average 5.76 yards per carry against them. But South Alabama leads the Sun Belt in turnover margin at +1.3 per game, and that's exactly where we've struggled.

South Alabama's offense vs. Marshall's defense. Keenan Phillips has 444 yards and five touchdowns. He and PJ Martin have combined for 867 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. Against Arkansas State, Phillips ran for 157 yards and three scores and returned a kickoff 100 yards. Our run defense allows 193.8 yards per game (123rd). Tackling is everything Tuesday.

Series. South Alabama leads 1-0. The only meeting was a 28-0 Jaguars win in Mobile in 2023, and this is the first game between the schools in Huntington.

Availability. No official conference availability report as of Oct. 18, 2026. I found no confirmed injury report for either team, so statuses are unknown, including the starting quarterback.

South Alabama debuts its own insider this week. Welcome to Huntington, neighbor. We'll be kind until kickoff.

Three questions that decide it:
1. Can Marshall win the turnover battle after losing it 6-0 to Coastal?
2. Can the Herd's defense tackle Phillips and Martin?
3. Who plays quarterback, and can he finish in the red zone, where Marshall ranks 129th?

Local Flavor

I'm not naming Huntington spots until I've confirmed them for you. Wear green. Not an ad.

My call: South Alabama Jaguars 34, Marshall Thundering Herd 32.
