"Pedigree Tells": Rhett Abernathy-Coyle Welcomes the Commodores to Kroger Field

Rhett Abernathy-Coyle · Kentucky Insider · College Debut · Week 8

Meet Your Insider
Pedigree tells. Good evening, friends, I'm Rhett Abernathy-Coyle. I grew up on a horse farm out past Keeneland, mucking stalls before school and watching yearlings run in the morning mist. I learned early that you can tell a great deal about a horse from its bloodlines, and I grade football players the same way a Derby breeder grades a foal. I travel with the Wildcats and I live with the Wildcats, and every week I'll bring you the players, the matchups, the history and the storylines, with a Southern gentleman's flourish. When we win, you'll hear my best Derby announcer: "And down the stretch they come!" When we lose, I'll say, "Even the best horses stumble," and adjust my hat. Now, pull up a chair, and let's talk bloodlines.

The School in 60 Seconds
The Wildcats represent the University of Kentucky in the SEC. Home is Kroger Field in Lexington, opened in 1973 and listed at 61,000 seats. The last five seasons: a fine 10-3 in 2021, then 7-6, 7-6, 4-8 and 5-7. So friends, this 6-1 start is a horse that broke slow last year and is now running at the front of the field.

The Coach and the Scheme
Will Stein is our first-year head coach; CFBD dates his hire to Dec. 1, 2025. And what a debut. This team wins by taking care of the ball and taking it away. We've lost only 5 turnovers and taken away 16, good for a plus-11 margin, 3rd in FBS. That's a thoroughbred that never breaks stride. We score 32.7 points a game (46th) and run for 166.1 (56th). We play clean, 44.4 penalty yards a game (23rd). We have 18 sacks. Now, every horse has a flaw: we convert just 29.1% of third downs, last in FBS, and our pass defense allows 249.7 yards a game (116th).

Players to Know
QB Kenny Minchey: 141 of 206 for 1,552 yards, 13 TD and just one interception. At Oklahoma he went 21 of 28 for 158 yards and two scores. Pure pedigree.
RB C.J. Baxter: 484 yards on 87 carries and 8 TD. Against Oklahoma, Jason Patterson led our backs with 38 yards on 12 carries, and I haven't seen an official report on Baxter's status this week.
WR Kenny Darby: 34 catches, 436 yards, 3 TD. WR Nic Anderson: five catches for 48 yards at Oklahoma.
LB Grant Godfrey: team-high 67 tackles. DL Mi'Quise Humphrey-Grace: 4 sacks. DB Jordan Castell: 4 interceptions.

The Conference Picture
Kentucky is 6-1 and 4-1 in the SEC, ranked No. 12 by both the AP and the coaches. We beat Youngstown State 45-13, won at Texas A&M 31-21, beat South Alabama 45-21, won at South Carolina 35-34, beat LSU 35-34 and won at Oklahoma 21-13. The one loss: Alabama, 45-17. We're 3-0 on the road. After Vanderbilt, we have a week off, then go to No. 11 Tennessee on Nov. 7. I won't do standings math, friends. I'll only say this horse is in the race.
Down the stretch: two one-point wins in a row, at South Carolina and against LSU. That's a photo finish twice. Champions win those.
Bloodlines, friends: a first-year coach, a quarterback with one interception in seven games and a defense that keeps taking the ball away. When I see a yearling with that kind of balance, I call the farm manager and say, keep an eye on that one. The Alabama loss? Even the best young horses get beat in their first big race. What matters is how they run the next one, and this team has won five straight since. Three of those wins came on the road, in hostile barns.

This Week: Vanderbilt (3-4) at No. 12 Kentucky (6-1)
Saturday, Oct. 24 · 7:30 p.m. ET · Kroger Field, Lexington · SEC Network.
Last week: we won 21-13 at Oklahoma. Vanderbilt lost 31-21 to Arkansas.
The history: CFBD shows Kentucky won seven of the 10 meetings from 2016 through 2025.
Their offense vs. our defense: Vanderbilt throws for 235.1 yards a game (63rd), and receiver Junior Sherrill has 628 receiving yards. Our 116th-ranked pass defense must keep him in front. But Vanderbilt has thrown 7 interceptions, and Jordan Castell has 4 of ours. That's a fine matchup for a ball hawk.
Our offense vs. their defense: Vanderbilt's run defense allowed 196 yards to Ole Miss and 170 to Arkansas. That's an open lane on the rail.
Third downs: our weak spot, last in FBS. Vanderbilt's defense has allowed 29.7 points a game (115th).
Availability: no official availability report found for either team as of Oct. 18.
What decides it: (1) Our turnover habit, plus-11. (2) Running the ball at a defense that's struggled to stop it. (3) Keeping Sherrill in check.
To Pippa Ashcroft, Vanderbilt's insider: a song about every game? Charming. Write me one about a horse, and I'll come to the show.

Local Flavor (unsponsored, not an ad)
In Lexington for the game? Joe Bologna's on West Maxwell Street is a longtime family pizza spot.

My call: Kentucky Wildcats 33, Vanderbilt Commodores 22.
