Meet Your Insider
Purple reign, y'all! I'm Lila Shenandoah, your James Madison insider at The Cover Window. I'm a former JMU cheer captain who somehow became the program's living encyclopedia. I travel with this team, I live with this team, and I turn every stat into a cheer. Yes, even penalties. "Give me a FLAG! Give me a FIVE! Give me. a moment to collect myself!"
Here's what you get from me. Glam, volume, and receipts. I'm excited, I'm all-in, and every number I chant has a source behind it. Every opponent gets a respectful pom-pom wave, and I don't invent anything, ever. If I don't know, I'll say, "Hold that chant, I'm checking." The Shenandoah Valley shows up loud and proud for the Dukes. Give me a J, give me an M, give me a third-down stop.
The School in 60 Seconds
JMU first fielded a football team in 1972, and the Dukes play on campus at Bridgeforth Stadium in Harrisonburg, Virginia. CFBD lists it as built in 1975 with a capacity of 24,877. JMU won FCS national championships in 2004 and 2016 and finished as national runner-up in 2017 and 2019. The Dukes accepted an invitation to the FBS in 2021 and joined the Sun Belt. Wikipedia's intro gives both 2022 and 2023 as the start of conference play, so I'm flagging that as conflicting. Famous Dukes include Charles Haley, who won five Super Bowl rings and is in both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
The last five seasons are pure cheer material: 12-2, 8-3, 11-2, 9-4 and 12-2. Give me a W! Give me lots of them!
The Coach and the Scheme
Billy Napier is in his first season. CFBD lists his hire date as Dec. 6, 2025. He was head coach at Louisiana from 2018 to 2021, going 40-12 with three straight seasons of 10 or more wins, and then at Florida from 2022 to 2025. Before becoming a head coach, he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arizona State in 2017.
The 2026 numbers make me want to do a full basket toss. JMU averages 42.9 points per game (3rd in FBS), 461 yards per game (18th) and 223.6 rushing yards (14th), at 5.71 yards per carry. The defense allows 16 points per game (19th) and 114.3 rushing yards (35th). Opponents average 3.31 yards per carry, and the Dukes have 18 sacks. They're +7 in turnover margin (8th). The flag cheer gets a workout, though: 71.1 penalty yards per game (119th).
Players to Know
QB Camden Coleman: 13 TD, 1 INT, 63.2%. Season yardage is conflicting by one yard: AP lists 1,336 and ESPN lists 1,335. Against Georgia State he went 13 of 19 for 185 yards and two touchdowns.
RB George Pettaway: 7 TD. AP lists 755 yards on 110 carries, and ESPN lists 767 on 109, so that's conflicting. He ran 14 times for 119 yards and a touchdown against Georgia State.
WR Ja'Corey Scott: 22 catches, 333 yards, 4 TD.
WR Jeremiah Harrison: two catches for 54 yards against Georgia State.
LB Nakian Jackson: team leader in tackles (50) and sacks (2.5). Give me an N! Give me a J!
The Conference Picture
James Madison is 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Sun Belt. The Dukes are 4-0 at home and 3-0 on the road, with road wins at San Diego State, Old Dominion and Georgia Southern. They are not ranked in the poll data in my pack. The closest calls were the opener against Liberty (20-13) and at Georgia Southern (27-24). A win in Boone would make it 8-0 and 5-0 in the league.
This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides
James Madison (7-0) at App State (4-2) · Thursday, Oct. 22, 7:00 p.m. ET · Kidd Brewer Stadium, Boone, N.C. · ESPNU
Last time out. The Dukes beat Georgia State 49-22 on Oct. 17. App State rallied past Coastal Carolina 35-32 on Oct. 16, with Jaquari Lewis scoring four rushing touchdowns.
JMU's offense vs. App State's defense. Our ground game against a run defense that allows 137.8 yards per game (60th). Pettaway gets the ball, the offensive front gets the credit, I get the megaphone. App State is +4 in turnover margin (22nd), and Caleb Sandstrom has five sacks, so ball security and protection come first. Our red-zone offense scores 94.7% of the time (13th).
App State's offense vs. JMU's defense. The Mountaineers throw for 267.7 yards per game (33rd). Malachi Singleton has 1,429 yards and only two interceptions, and Sam Pickett III has 411 receiving yards. Our pass defense allows 236.4 yards per game (103rd), so that's the matchup to watch. App State also has a running quarterback option in Henry Hasselbeck, who ran for 125 yards at Coastal.
Series. JMU's athletics site lists the Dukes at 6-14 all-time against App State, so the Mountaineers lead the series. Last year JMU won 58-10 in Harrisonburg on Nov. 15, 2025. Respect the history, then cheer for the present.
Availability. No official conference availability report as of Oct. 18, 2026. I found no confirmed JMU injury news. App State's quarterback plan is unconfirmed after both Singleton and Hasselbeck played at Coastal.
App State's debut insider is a whittling storyteller from the High Country. I'll bring the pom-poms if he brings a porch.
Three questions that decide it:
1. Can JMU's run game keep rolling on the road?
2. Can our pass defense handle Singleton and Pickett?
3. Can the Dukes cut down on penalty yards (71.1 per game) in a loud road setting?
Local Flavor
Family Weekend is happening in Boone, so it'll be packed. I'll share road-trip stops once I've confirmed them. Not an ad.
My call: James Madison Dukes 35, App State Mountaineers 21.
