"Orange You Glad It's Saturday?": Margery Vandermolen Welcomes the Ducks to Champaign

By Margery Vandermolen · Illinois Insider

Meet Your Insider
Good afternoon, class! Oh, sorry. Old habits. Welcome to The Cover Window, Illini Nation. I'm Margery Vandermolen, your Illinois insider, and I explain football the way your best-loved teacher explained long division: patiently, cheerfully and with a lot of charts. I'm a prairie-state numbers whiz. I've crunched the numbers on just about everything, and the numbers always say the same thing: orange. You'll get corn jokes from me. You'll get chart jokes. Sometimes you'll get a corn chart, which is both. And every Saturday morning I'll ask you the same question: "Orange you glad it's Saturday?" When something wonderful happens on the field, there's only one thing to say: "Oskee-wow-wow!" Each week I'll give you the players, the coaches and the matchup, explained clearly enough that Grandma and the grandkids can both follow along.

The School in 60 Seconds
Here's your history lesson, and yes, it will be on the test. Illinois is a founding member of the Big Ten and claims five national championships: 1914, 1919, 1923, 1927 and 1951. The 1923 title team opened Memorial Stadium and introduced the world to Harold "Red" Grange, the Galloping Ghost. On Oct. 18, 1924, at the stadium's dedication game, Grange scored four touchdowns against Michigan in the first 12 minutes. He ran for a fifth and threw for a sixth in a 39-14 win. ESPN once chose the legendary No. 77 as the greatest player in college football history. The stadium honors University of Illinois students who died in World War I. Illinois also claims 15 Big Ten titles. High fives all around.

The Coach and the Scheme
Bret Bielema was named the 26th head coach in Illinois history on Dec. 19, 2020. He's an Illinois native, and he said at the time, "Illinois and the Big Ten is home for me". One of his early wins was a nine-overtime victory at Penn State in 2021, the longest game in college football history. The 2026 numbers show an offense that does a little of everything: 31.8 points and 405.5 yards a game, with a near-even run-pass split and 5.06 yards a carry. Illinois takes care of the ball, with only four turnovers lost all season. Here's the part of the chart I'd circle in red: the defense allows 27.8 points and 375.2 yards a game, and opponents have 248.3 passing yards a game. The pass rush has five sacks.

Players to Know
QB Katin Houser: 122 of 184 for 1,440 yards, 12 TD and 4 INT. He broke his left hand at Michigan State and will be out.
QB Michael Clayton II (freshman): came off the bench at Michigan State, threw two touchdowns and led the overtime win. He'll likely make his first career start on Saturday.
WR Collin Dixon: 47 catches, 608 yards and 9 touchdowns, third in FBS in receiving touchdowns. I'd like everyone to take a moment to admire that number.
RB Aidan Laughery: 391 yards on 62 carries.
Defense: LB James Kreutz has 34 tackles. DB Matthew Bailey returned an interception 88 yards for a touchdown and has 41 tackles.

The Conference Picture
Illinois is 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten, 2-2 at home and 1-1 on the road. The Illini are not ranked. They lost to Duke 31-27 and Purdue 24-17 at home, and 42-19 at Ohio State. A win over a ranked Oregon team at home would be the kind of result that rearranges a whole spreadsheet. Pardon me, a whole chart.

This Week: Oregon (4-2) at Illinois (3-3)
Saturday, Oct. 24 · 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET) · Gies Memorial Stadium · Big Ten Network · Military Appreciation and Foundation Weekend.
Last week: Illinois had a bye, coming off the 38-37 overtime win at Michigan State on Oct. 10. Oregon beat Nebraska 17-14 on Dylan Raiola's touchdown pass with 28 seconds left.
Our offense vs. their defense: this is the tough homework assignment. Oregon allows only 3.25 yards a carry and 20.7 points a game, and it has nine interceptions. LB Matayo Uiagalelei has five sacks. A freshman quarterback will need help from our run game, which averages 5.06 a carry.
Their offense vs. our defense: Oregon throws for 283.3 yards a game. Its starting quarterback, Dante Moore, has missed two games with a concussion and has no announced return date. Raiola and Brock Thomas are competing to start.
Series: Oregon leads 3-1. The Ducks won the last meeting 38-9 in Eugene in 2024, and Illinois's only win came in 1970, 20-16.
Availability: Houser is out with a broken left hand. Oregon's last official report (Oct. 17) listed Moore, WR Evan Stewart, Aaron Flowers and Jeremiah McClellan out. I found no official report for this game as of Oct. 18, 2026.
What decides it: (1) How calm Clayton is in his first start. (2) Whether Dixon can keep scoring against a defense with nine interceptions. (3) Whether our defense can keep Oregon's passing game in check, whoever is throwing.
And to Nix Wyatt-Aldana, Oregon's insider: I gave your uniforms a very fair grade, dear. It's on the chart. The chart is orange.

My call: Oregon Ducks 34, Illinois Fighting Illini 24.
