Meet Your Insider
Greetings, Jackets fans, and welcome to The Cover Window. I'm Wendell Quist, your Georgia Tech insider. I'm an aerospace-engineering grad, and I model the trajectory of every punt, every pass and every kickoff. Everything is physics. I mean everything, including my relationship with the coaching staff, which I describe as a stable orbit. I travel with this team and I live with this team, with graph paper in my pocket. When we win, I calculate the exact trajectory of the winning kick and cheer in decimals. When we lose, I re-run the simulation 10,000 times looking for the bug. Every week you'll get the players, the coaches and the matchup, plotted to scale. "Graph paper doesn't lie."
The School in 60 Seconds
Georgia Tech claims national championships in 1917, 1928 and 1990. Home is Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field, listed at 55,000, in the middle of Midtown Atlanta. Last season was an excellent trajectory: Georgia Tech went 9-4 and 6-2 in the ACC. This season the curve has dipped. We're 2-4. But Saturday is homecoming, and I've done the math on homecoming energy. Dimensionless, but large.
The Coach and the Scheme
Brent Key was hired on Nov. 29, 2022. In 2026 the offense is pass-friendly: 254.7 passing yards a game (44th) and only 127.2 rushing yards (112th), with runs on about 48% of plays. Nine passing touchdowns and nine rushing. The defense is the variable to fix. It allows 392.2 yards a game (110th) and 179.0 rushing yards (110th). Turnovers, too: we've lost 7 and forced only 3, a minus-4 margin (113th). Penalties average 70.5 yards a game (117th). And the clock: we hold the ball only 27:47 a game, 120th in FBS. Three variables. Solve for all three, and the output improves.
Players to Know
QB Alberto Mendoza: 1,528 yards, 9 TD, 4 INT, 71.2% completions. At Virginia Tech he went 29 of 38 for 335 yards and two TDs. A very accurate launch angle. Against Duke he completed 23 of 30 for 218 yards and a TD.
WR Jordan Allen: 38 catches, 432 yards, 1 TD, including 10 catches for 120 yards last week.
RB Justice Haynes (No. 22): 462 yards and 3 TD on 87 carries. RB Trelain Maddox: 96 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries at Virginia Tech.
DT Tawfiq Thomas (No. 95): 32 tackles and 2 sacks.
The Conference Picture
We're 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the ACC, 2-2 at home and 0-2 on the road. The losses: Colorado 14-13 at home (one point! I've re-run that simulation more than 10,000 times), Tennessee, at Stanford 34-27 and at Virginia Tech 34-24. The wins: Mercer 44-11 and Duke 28-25. At Virginia Tech we fell behind 24-3, then cut it to seven early in the second half before falling short. The comeback curve was there. The finishing slope wasn't. Georgia Tech On SI listed the recurring bugs: turnovers, missed field goals and explosive plays allowed on defense. Three bugs. Every one is fixable in the code.
This Week: Boston College (3-3) at Georgia Tech (2-4)
Saturday, Oct. 24 · 3:30 p.m. ET · Bobby Dodd Stadium · Homecoming. TV wasn't listed in the AP preview I used.
Last week: we lost 34-24 at Virginia Tech. Boston College beat Pittsburgh 27-21.
Our offense vs. their defense: Boston College's pass defense ranks 18th, allowing 169.3 yards a game. But its run defense allows 159.5 (95th). The geometry says run the ball, then throw off it once the safeties step up.
Their offense vs. our defense: BC QB Mason McKenzie is a former Division II quarterback and a running threat, with 444 rushing yards. He's also thrown 7 interceptions. Boston College scores on only 60% of red-zone trips (135th), and our red-zone defense ranks 44th.
Series: Georgia Tech leads 8-5. Last year we won 36-34 at Boston College, snapping a three-game losing streak in the series. Before that, BC won 48-27 in 2020, 41-30 in 2021 and 38-23 in 2023. The data has variance. Let's keep the most recent data point.
Availability: I found no official availability report for either team as of Oct. 18, 2026.
What decides it: (1) Run defense against McKenzie. (2) Turnovers. We're minus-4, and BC is plus-1. (3) Penalties. Seventy yards a game is a lot of drag. (4) Possession. BC holds the ball 30:27 a game, and we hold it 27:47. Shorter possessions for us means fewer chances, so third downs on both sides matter.
And to Siobhan Dunleavy, Boston College's insider: I respect the gavel. But the gavel obeys gravity too, counselor.
