"Not that Valley, babe": Rosalind 'Roz' Ayala Takes the Open Week

Rosalind 'Roz' Ayala · Fresno State Insider · College Debut · Week 8

Meet Your Insider
Not that Valley, babe! I'm Rosalind 'Roz' Ayala, and I'm your Fresno State insider here at The Cover Window. The short version: I'm a raisin-grower's daughter who pitches herself as the 'Valley Girl' (different valley). I follow this team from the stands, every week, and I love it out loud. Fair warning about my habit: 'Which Valley' jokes with Sloane Ashby-Kim, the Pac-12 expert. On the podcast, my segment is called Which Valley. The show card describes it like this: valley jokes with Sloane Ashby-Kim. My rules are simple. I keep it clean and kind, I celebrate players as people, I respect every opponent, and I never invent a stat, a quote or a fact. If I can't source it, you won't hear it from me. This week the Bulldogs have an open date, so instead of a game preview you get the full tour: the school, the coach, the players, the league and what's next.

The School in 60 Seconds
Home is Valley Children's Stadium in Fresno, CA, built in 1980 with a listed capacity of 41,031. The playing surface is Jim Sweeney Field, per Wikipedia. The fight song is "Fight Varsity", per Wikipedia. The band is the Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band, per Wikipedia. The last five seasons went 10-3, 10-4, 9-4, 6-7 and 9-4, from 2021 through 2025. The most frequent opponents from 2016 through 2025 tell you who matters around here: Nevada (7-3 in 10 meetings), UNLV (6-3 in 9 meetings), Hawai'i (5-4 in 9 meetings), San José State (6-3 in 9 meetings). That's a list of games, not an official rivalry list. The 2026 recruiting class ranked No. 70 nationally in CFBD's team rankings. And if you visit, ask somebody about the Milk Can trophy with Boise State; it's the tradition I'd show you first.

The Coach and the Scheme
Matt Entz leads the Bulldogs; CollegeFootballData dates the hire to Dec. 5, 2024. Through 7 games, Fresno State scores 27.6 points a game and allows 20.9. By our math from CFBD figures, the offense runs on about 53% of its plays, gaining 140.4 rushing yards and 212.1 passing yards a game. That's a balanced menu. On third down, Fresno State converts 36.1% of the time and opponents convert 35.6%. The defense has 14 sacks and 36 tackles for loss, and the turnover ledger reads 4 giveaways against 12 takeaways. Penalties cost 31.0 yards a game. The high-water mark so far was 49 points against Sacramento State on Sept. 12, 2026, and 2 of the 7 games were decided by eight points or fewer. Over the season, Fresno State has outscored opponents by a combined 47 points. Every one of those numbers is a little homework for the open week.

Players to Know
QB Jayden Mandal (passing leader): 123/195, 1393 yards, 8 TD, 1 INT.
RB Rayshon Luke (rushing leader): 52 carries, 333 yards, 1 TD.
WR Josiah Freeman (receiving leader): 32 catches, 445 yards, 2 TD.
On defense, LB K'vion Thunderbird leads with 61 tackles; DL Dylan Hampsten has 3 sacks; DB Simeon Harris has 3 interceptions.
Injury news: we found no official availability report during an open week, so we're not listing any. Official reports return before the next game.

The Conference Picture
Fresno State is 4-3 overall, 2-1 at home and 2-2 away. In Pac-12 play the Bulldogs are 1-2, which sorts them No. 6 of 8 by record. Oregon State sits on top at 3-0 in league games. Right around us: Utah State (1-1) and Colorado State (0-2). The top of the table: Oregon State (3-0), Boise State (2-0), San Diego State (2-1). That order is a sort by record, not the official tiebreaker order. Every league game from here is a chance to move up, and the open week is when the plan for that climb gets built. An open date in late October is a chance to heal up and study the stretch run.

This Week: Open Date
No game for Fresno State this week. The last time out, on Oct. 17, 2026, the Bulldogs lost to San Diego State on the road, 26-23. Next up: Saturday, Oct. 31, vs. Oregon State, in Valley Children's Stadium, Fresno, with a 8 p.m. PT kickoff on USA Sports. Oregon State comes in at 5-2. After that, CFBD lists at Utah State (Nov. 7), at Texas State (Nov. 14), vs. Colorado State (Nov. 21). Until then: rest, film and a little extra time in the ice tub.

My Open-Week Take
Here's how I see it, friends. An open date isn't a day off; it's a deep breath. The coaches get to fix the little things, the players get their legs back, and we fans get a Saturday to call our families, clean the grill and argue happily about the depth chart. When the Bulldogs come back, I'll be right there in the stands, same seat, same voice, and I'll bring you every sourced detail. Thanks for spending part of your open week with me. Not that Valley, babe!
