"That play had scales": Dax Marchetti Takes the Open Week

Dax Marchetti · Florida Insider · College Debut · Week 8

Meet Your Insider
That play had scales! I'm Dax Marchetti, and I'm your Florida insider here at The Cover Window. The short version: I'm a herpetology minor who compares every defense to a reptile species. I follow this team from the stands, every week, and I love it out loud. Fair warning about my habit: classifies every opponent as a species; his reptile index is weirdly accurate. On the podcast, my segment is called Reptile Index. The show card describes it like this: classifies the opponent as a species, lovingly. My rules are simple. I keep it clean and kind, I celebrate players as people, I respect every opponent, and I never invent a stat, a quote or a fact. If I can't source it, you won't hear it from me. This week the Gators have an open date, so instead of a game preview you get the full tour: the school, the coach, the players, the league and what's next.

The School in 60 Seconds
Home is Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, FL, built in 1930 with a listed capacity of 88,548. The playing surface is Steve Spurrier–Florida Field, per Wikipedia. The fight song is "The Orange and Blue", per Wikipedia. The band is the Pride of the Sunshine, per Wikipedia. The program claims national titles from 1996, 2006, 2008, per Wikipedia. The last five seasons went 6-7, 6-7, 5-7, 8-5 and 4-8, from 2021 through 2025. The most frequent opponents from 2016 through 2025 tell you who matters around here: Kentucky (5-5 in 10 meetings), Tennessee (6-4 in 10 meetings), Georgia (2-8 in 10 meetings), LSU (3-7 in 10 meetings). That's a list of games, not an official rivalry list. The 2026 recruiting class ranked No. 17 nationally in CFBD's team rankings. And if you visit, ask somebody about the Swamp; it's the tradition I'd show you first.

The Coach and the Scheme
Jon Sumrall leads the Gators; CollegeFootballData dates the hire to Nov. 30, 2025. Through 7 games, Florida scores 39.6 points a game and allows 28.3. By our math from CFBD figures, the offense runs on about 57% of its plays, gaining 194.3 rushing yards and 256.6 passing yards a game. That's a team that wants to lean on people. On third down, Florida converts 45.1% of the time and opponents convert 44.1%. The defense has 22 sacks and 53 tackles for loss, and the turnover ledger reads 7 giveaways against 9 takeaways. Penalties cost 74.6 yards a game. The high-water mark so far was 66 points against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5, 2026, and 2 of the 7 games were decided by eight points or fewer. Over the season, Florida has outscored opponents by a combined 79 points. Every one of those numbers is a little homework for the open week.

Players to Know
QB Aaron Philo (passing leader): 105/149, 1341 yards, 9 TD, 3 INT.
RB Jadan Baugh (rushing leader): 135 carries, 763 yards, 13 TD.
WR Dallas Wilson (receiving leader): 29 catches, 403 yards, 3 TD.
On defense, LB Myles Graham leads with 48 tackles; LB Jayden Woods has 4.5 sacks; S DJ Coleman has 2 interceptions.
Injury news: we found no official availability report during an open week, so we're not listing any. Official reports return before the next game.

The Conference Picture
Florida is 5-2 overall, 3-1 at home and 2-1 away. In SEC play the Gators are 3-2, which sorts them No. 6 of 16 by record. Georgia sits on top at 4-1 in league games. Right around us: Alabama (3-2) and LSU (2-2). The top of the table: Georgia (4-1), Kentucky (4-1), Tennessee (3-1). That order is a sort by record, not the official tiebreaker order. The Gators are No. 20 in the latest AP poll in our data. Every league game from here is a chance to move up, and the open week is when the plan for that climb gets built. An open date in late October is a chance to heal up and study the stretch run.

This Week: Open Date
No game for Florida this week. The last time out, on Oct. 17, 2026, the Gators beat Texas on the road, 27-24. Next up: Saturday, Oct. 31, vs. Georgia, in Atlanta, with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. Georgia comes in at 6-1. From 2016 through 2025, Florida went 2-8 against Georgia in 10 meetings. After that, CFBD lists vs. Oklahoma (Nov. 7), at Kentucky (Nov. 14), vs. Vanderbilt (Nov. 21), at Florida State (Nov. 27). Until then: rest, film and a little extra time in the ice tub.

My Open-Week Take
Here's how I see it, friends. An open date isn't a day off; it's a deep breath. The coaches get to fix the little things, the players get their legs back, and we fans get a Saturday to call our families, clean the grill and argue happily about the depth chart. When the Gators come back, I'll be right there in the stands, same seat, same voice, and I'll bring you every sourced detail. Thanks for spending part of your open week with me. That play had scales!
