"Right Down the Street": Lourdes Ibarguen-Tate Brings the 305 Heart to Tuesday Night

By Lourdes Ibarguen-Tate · Florida International Insider

Meet Your Insider

¡Hola, Panther people! Welcome to The Cover Window. I'm Lourdes Ibarguen-Tate, and I grew up in Sweetwater, five minutes from campus, at a kitchen table where my abuela taught me football with cafecito and dominoes. The dominoes were the players. The sugar packets were the defense. To this day I can't watch a fourth-down stop without craving a colada.

Here's what I am: the loudest, warmest, most bilingual hype machine FIU has ever had, and I will never, ever let anybody sleep on this program. Here's what I'm not: a person who makes things up. Every week I'll bring you the real numbers, the real schedule, and an honest, kind look at whoever we're playing. If I don't know something, I'll say "no sé" and go find out. Miami has a lot of teams, but only one is right down the street from my abuela's house. ¡Vamos, Panthers!

The School in 60 Seconds

FIU plays in Conference USA at the FBS level, and home is Pitbull Stadium in Miami. The stadium opened in 1995, and CFBD lists its capacity at 20,000, which matches Wikipedia's figure. The program's trophy case includes a share of the 2010 Sun Belt championship and three bowl appearances. Last season was a big one: under first-year coach Willie Simmons, the Panthers went 7-6 and made their first bowl trip since 2019.

Look at the last five seasons and you'll see why that mattered so much to my family: 1-11 in 2021, then three straight 4-8 years, then 7-6 in 2025. The Panthers also play Florida Atlantic every year in the Shula Bowl.

The Coach and the Scheme

Willie Simmons is in Year Two. CFBD lists his hire date as Dec. 7, 2024. Before FIU, he was head coach at Florida A&M from 2018 to 2023, winning a black college national championship and a SWAC title in 2023, and at Prairie View A&M from 2015 to 2017. He played quarterback at Clemson and The Citadel.

What do the 2026 numbers say? This team wins with defense. FIU allows 14.7 points per game, and opponents average just 3.21 yards per carry. The Panthers have 14 sacks in six games. The offense is perfectly balanced in volume, with 214 rushing attempts and 214 pass attempts, but it averages only 19.7 points per game and 3.36 yards per carry. Ball security needs work: nine giveaways against eight takeaways.

Players to Know

QB JJ Kohl: 116 of 199 for 1,458 yards, 7 TD, 7 INT. He threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns in the loss at Jax State.
RB Devonte Lyons: 268 yards on 65 carries, 1 TD. He ran for 78 yards on 14 carries against New Mexico State.
WR Maguire Anderson: 33 catches, 534 yards, 4 TD, the team's top receiver.
DL DeeJay Holmes Jr.: 5 sacks, plus 6 tackles for loss.
DB DeAndre Boykins: a team-high 37 tackles.
K Robert Czeremcha: made a career-high five field goals against New Mexico State, tying the program record. He missed from 38 and 49 at Jax State, and I know he wants Tuesday badly.

The Conference Picture

FIU is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA. Here's the fun part: the Panthers are 3-0 at home and 0-3 on the road, and after the New Mexico State win AP noted the Panthers had won five straight home games dating to last season. All three losses came by 10 points or fewer: at USF (19-9), at Florida Atlantic (16-10) and at Jax State (27-24). FIU is not ranked. A home win Tuesday gets the Panthers back above.500 in league play.

This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides

Middle Tennessee (3-3) at FIU (3-3) · Tuesday, Oct. 20, 7:00 p.m. ET · Pitbull Stadium, Miami · CBS Sports Network

Last time out. FIU lost 27-24 at Jax State on Oct. 13, when Garrison Rippa kicked a 26-yard field goal with 44 seconds left. Middle Tennessee rallied past Delaware 33-30 the same night. Roman Gagliano threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns, ran for another, and led a 10-play, 93-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Neo Clifton with 3:06 to go.

FIU's defense vs. MTSU's offense. This is the matchup I'm watching with my cafecito. The Blue Raiders score 22.8 points per game and throw for 200.7 yards a game. Gagliano is efficient: 110 of 188, 1,204 yards, 11 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Antonio Martin Jr. has 433 rushing yards, and Cam'ron Lacy has 35 catches for 369 yards. But FIU allows only 166.0 passing yards and 100.0 rushing yards per game. Holmes against MTSU's protection could decide a lot of drives.

FIU's offense vs. MTSU's defense. The Blue Raiders allow 28.3 points per game and 5.21 yards per carry. They gave up 55 points at Kansas. If Lyons and the run game can get going, Kohl gets manageable third downs. MTSU's defense does have a playmaker in linebacker Korey Smith, who leads his team with 56 tackles.

Series. Middle Tennessee leads the all-time series 14-7, and CFBD shows MTSU winning seven of 10 meetings from 2016 to 2025. But FIU has won the last two: 35-24 in 2024 and 56-30 in Murfreesboro in 2025. That 2025 win started a 4-0 finish to the regular season.

Availability. No official conference availability report for this game as of Oct. 18, 2026. I found no confirmed FIU or MTSU injury news in the sources above, so every status is unknown to me until game notes come out.

Middle Tennessee debuts its own insider this week too. Welcome, neighbor.

Three questions that decide it:
1. Can FIU's pass rush rattle Gagliano, who has thrown just two interceptions all year?
2. Can the Panthers finish drives with touchdowns instead of leaning on Czeremcha?
3. Does the 3-0 home magic hold one more Tuesday?

Local Flavor

I'm not listing restaurants until I can confirm them for you. For now: bring your family, bring your voice, and get to Pitbull Stadium early. Not an ad.

My call: Florida International Panthers 28, Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 16.
