Meet Your Insider
Hey, Owls, welcome to The Cover Window! I'm Kaia Brightwater, your Florida Atlantic insider. I used to play beach volleyball here in Boca Raton, and now I analyze offenses like swell reports. Choppy means three-and-outs. Clean means long, smooth drives. And a closeout? That's when the whole wave crashes at once, which is how a defense feels when we go tempo. I travel with this team and I live with this team. The beachy talk is real, but so is the analysis underneath it, I promise. When we win, it's "a perfect swell day" and a slow-motion hair flip. When we lose, I sigh "flat water" and post a sunset anyway, because it's still Boca. Every week you'll get the players, the coaches and the matchup, sun and stats. "Surf's up on tempo, babe."
The School in 60 Seconds
Florida Atlantic football is young, and it was built by a legend. Howard Schnellenberger founded the program from scratch and served as its first head coach. Home is Flagler Credit Union Stadium (Howard Schnellenberger Field) in Boca Raton, listed at 29,419, close enough to the Atlantic to smell the salt on a breezy Saturday. The Owls play in the American Athletic Conference, and the series with Rice is as even as a glassy morning: 3-3. The recent history is a lot of close finishes: FAU won in 2025 (24-17 per the school) and 17-14 in 2022, and Rice won 24-21 in 2023. Back in 2016, FAU won 42-25. I love a program that's still writing its story.
The Coach and the Scheme
Zach Kittley was named the Hagerty Family Head Football Coach on Dec. 2, 2024. The 2026 numbers say this offense is all about the air. FAU throws for 307.3 yards a game with 15 passing touchdowns. It averages 35.0 points and 422.3 yards a game. The run game is choppier, at 3.29 yards a carry. On defense, the waves are bigger than I'd like. FAU allows 31.5 points a game and 5.43 yards a carry. On the bright side, the Owls have forced eight turnovers and lost six.
Players to Know
QB Caden Veltkamp: 1,743 yards and 15 TD. At Army he went 33 of 48 for 318 yards and three touchdowns. That's a clean swell, and the kind of day I want every Saturday.
WR Kelby Valsin: 47 catches, 601 yards and 6 TD, including 7 catches, 89 yards and a touchdown at Army.
LB Joseph Sipp Jr.: a team-high 41 tackles and a sack.
I couldn't verify other season leaders from a free source, so I'm keeping the list short and accurate.
The Conference Picture
Florida Atlantic is 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the American, 3-0 at home and 1-2 on the road. The Owls aren't ranked. The wins came against Navy (38-30), FIU (16-10), UL Monroe and Texas Southern, and the losses were at Florida and at Army. Staying perfect at home keeps FAU in the conference mix. At home the Owls are outscoring opponents 120-50, which is my kind of clean, glassy water. On the road it's been choppier, with 66 points allowed at Florida and 56 at Army. Good news, babe: this one's at home.
This Week: Rice (1-6) at Florida Atlantic (4-2)
Saturday, Oct. 24 · Noon ET · Flagler Credit Union Stadium · ESPNU. Surf report: 81 degrees, a 52% chance of showers and storms, and a 20 mph northeast wind. Choppy, babe.
Last week: FAU lost 56-24 at Army. Rice lost 38-17 at home to Tulsa.
Our offense vs. their defense: Rice allows 29.0 points a game and 188.7 passing yards. Veltkamp and Valsin should find room, as long as the wind cooperates.
Their offense vs. our defense: this is the wave to watch. Rice runs on 79% of its plays, and QB Jacurri Brown has 668 rushing yards, including 154 against Tulsa. Our run defense allows 5.43 a carry, and Army just ran all over us. Everyone has to stay in their lane. One positive: Rice has lost 10 turnovers and forced just 4, and its passing game averages only 78.7 yards a game. So if our front gets Rice behind schedule, that's when the closeout wave comes.
Series: tied 3-3. FAU won the last meeting in 2025, though the score is in conflict: 27-21 per, 24-17 in Houston per FAU Athletics, and we trust the school.
One more set of numbers for the notebook: this team has 8 sacks and has allowed 11, with 8 takeaways against 6 giveaways, and it has 8 rushing and 15 passing touchdowns.
Availability: I found no official availability report for either team as of Oct. 18, 2026.
What decides it: (1) Can our defense stop a run-heavy offense one week after Army scored 56? (2) Can Veltkamp handle the wind? (3) Tempo. If we go fast and stay clean, it's a perfect swell day.
And to Odalys Chen-Moreau, Rice's insider: love a fellow Owl! Bring your clipboard and some sunscreen.
