Meet Your Insider
Good evening. I'm Harrison Wexley-Moore IV, your Duke insider at The Cover Window. I'm pre-law, pre-med and, frankly, pre-everything. I know the playbook and the LSAT, and I travel and live with this team. Did I mention I also passed that exam? I did. Whichever one you're thinking of.
Here's my academic honor code for this column. Every fact has a citation, like any good thesis. If I don't know something, I'll mark it "incomplete" rather than invent an answer. I celebrate our players as people first, I respect every opponent, and I give thanks to God for the gift of a Friday night game. Durham, class is in session.
The School in 60 Seconds
Duke plays in the ACC and has won 18 conference championships: eight in the ACC and ten in the Southern Conference. The program counts 53 All-Americans, ten ACC Players of the Year and three Pro Football Hall of Famers. Home is Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, which CFBD lists as built in 1929 with 40,004 seats.
For decades the university de-emphasized football, starting around the mid-1960s. Then came a renaissance under David Cutcliffe from 2008 to 2021, including Duke's first Coastal Division title in 2013, clinched with a win over North Carolina. The last five seasons show the progress: 3-9 in 2021, then 9-4, 8-5, 9-4 and 9-5. Four straight winning seasons. I've written longer papers on less.
The Coach and the Scheme
Manny Diaz is our head coach. CFBD records his hire date as Dec. 7, 2023. He was head coach at Miami from 2019 to 2021 and defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Penn State in 2022 and 2023. He's also coached at Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech, Texas, Middle Tennessee, NC State and Florida State. That's a doctoral program in defense.
The 2026 defense earns honors. Duke allows 292.7 yards per game (21st in FBS) and 16.0 points (19th). The run defense ranks 18th at 92.5 yards per game. Opponents convert only 29.2% of third downs, 9th in FBS.
The offense controls the clock. Duke gains 442.7 yards per game (37th) and runs for 209.5 (22nd). It averages 33:17 of possession per game, 13th in FBS. Scoring sits at 31.7 points per game (52nd). The one failing grade: 73.8 penalty yards per game, 123rd. Even honor students get detention sometimes.
Players to Know
QB Walker Eget: 1,229 yards, 8 TD, 2 INT, 62.8% completions. Against North Carolina he went 24 of 38 for 249 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
RB Nate Sheppard: 820 rushing yards on 138 carries, eight touchdowns. He also leads the team in receiving with 28 catches for 259 yards and four scores. Against UNC he ran 20 times for 77 yards and caught 11 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. He's a double major.
WR Jared Richardson: three catches for 55 yards against North Carolina.
Kevin O'Connor: team-high three sacks.
Nick Morris Jr.: team-high 33 tackles.
The Conference Picture
Duke is 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. The Blue Devils started 4-0: 17-3 over Tulane, 31-27 at Illinois, 35-7 over Stanford and 62-7 over William & Mary. Then came two close losses: 28-25 at Georgia Tech and 24-20 to North Carolina. Both were decided by four points or fewer.
The rest of the ACC syllabus is demanding. After Virginia come Boston College at home, NC State and Miami on the road, Clemson at home and Wake Forest on the road. A win Friday gets Duke back to.500 in league play.
This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides
Duke (4-2) at Virginia (4-3) · Friday, Oct. 23, 7:00 p.m. ET · Scott Stadium, Charlottesville, Va. · ESPN
Last time out. Duke lost 24-20 to North Carolina on Oct. 17. Virginia lost 23-13 at SMU the same day.
Duke's offense vs. Virginia's defense. Virginia's pass defense is strong, allowing 173.9 yards per game (25th). Its run defense is softer, at 152.7 yards per game (88th). My thesis: hand it to Sheppard, keep the clock moving, and let our 33:17 possession average do the rest. Virginia is +5 in turnover margin (15th), so Eget must protect the ball.
Virginia's offense vs. Duke's defense. Beau Pribula has thrown 13 touchdowns with one interception. AP lists 1,217 passing yards and ESPN 1,211, so that's conflicting. Da'Shawn Martin has five touchdown catches. Virginia converts just 33.0% of third downs (120th) and scores on 74.1% of red-zone trips (124th). Our third-down defense ranks 9th. Peer review says that's a favorable matchup for our side.
Series. CFBD shows Virginia 8-2 against Duke from 2016 to 2025. Humbling. I've cited it anyway, because honesty is the whole point.
Availability. No official conference availability report has been published. I found no confirmed Duke injury news.
Three questions that decide it:
1. Can Sheppard and the run game exploit Virginia's 88th-ranked run defense?
2. Can our 9th-ranked third-down defense keep Virginia off schedule?
3. Can Duke trim those 73.8 penalty yards per game?
Prescott, the Virginia insider, refuses to say "campus." I'll refrain from charging him tuition for the word "Grounds."
Local Flavor
Charlottesville on a Friday night in late October should be a lovely setting, and Scott Stadium seats 61,500. Virginia's intro notes its stadium sits right next to the World Heritage Site portion of the university. Bring a coat, bring your manners, and bring your loudest Duke cheer. Not an ad.
My call: Virginia Cavaliers 25, Duke Blue Devils 23.
