Meet Your Insider
Attention on deck. I'm Captain Thaddeus Rourke, retired, your Army insider at The Cover Window. I spent my career as a logistics officer, so I read every option play like a supply-chain plan: right item, right place, right time. I travel and live with this team, and my boots are always shined.
Standing orders for this column. Every fact is sourced, like a properly filed report. If I don't know something, I'll log it as "status unknown" and move on. I celebrate these cadets as young leaders first, I respect every opponent, and I thank God daily for the men and women who serve. Discipline is a love letter to your teammates. Copy that, and beat Navy.
The School in 60 Seconds
Army football represents the United States Military Academy and plays at Michie Stadium in West Point, New York. Wikipedia lists capacity at 36,000 and CFBD at 38,000, so I'm flagging that as conflicting. The Black Knights play in the American Conference.
The honors roll is long. Army claims five national championships, including AP titles in 1944 and 1945. The academy has three Heisman winners: Doc Blanchard (1945), Glenn Davis (1946) and Pete Dawkins (1958). It counts 24 players and four coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame and 37 consensus All-Americans.
The last five seasons: 9-4, 6-6, 6-6, a magnificent 12-2 in 2024 and 7-6 in 2025. Mission accomplished more often than not.
The Coach and the Scheme
Jeff Monken has commanded since 2014, and CFBD records his hire date as Dec. 24, 2013. He was head coach at Georgia Southern from 2010 to 2013. Before that he worked under Paul Johnson as running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Georgia Southern, Navy and Georgia Tech. Yes, Navy. We've forgiven him.
The scheme is the option ground game, and the numbers prove it. Army runs for 357.5 yards per game, first in FBS. It throws for 69.2 yards per game, 137th, which is entirely by design. The Black Knights score 34.8 points per game (39th) and convert 95.2% of red-zone trips (11th). They hold the ball 34:42 per game, 3rd in FBS. And they're disciplined, at 35.8 penalty yards per game (6th).
The defense is our soft spot. Army allows 368.0 yards per game (84th) and 20.0 points (40th). Opponents convert 52.1% of third downs, 124th in FBS. That needs fixing on the double.
Players to Know
QB Cale Hellums: 719 rushing yards on 129 carries and 13 touchdowns, plus 358 passing yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Against FAU he ran 25 times for 195 yards and five touchdowns, including a 58-yard score. Outstanding execution.
RB Jake Rendina: seven carries for 86 yards against FAU, including a 61-yard touchdown.
RB Samari Howard: a 30-yard touchdown run on the game's second snap against FAU.
RB Bryson Luter: a 69-yard touchdown run on Army's final possession against FAU.
WR Brady Anderson: team-best seven catches for 102 yards. In this offense, every catch is a special operation.
Elijah Walton: team-high 42 tackles, and an interception on the first snap against FAU.
Victor Afolabi: team-high three sacks.
The Conference Picture
Army is 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the American. The Black Knights are 3-1 at home and 1-1 on the road. They beat Bryant 59-3, lost 28-24 to South Florida, won 21-17 at Temple and lost 31-29 at Louisiana Tech. Then came a 20-17 win over Tulane and the 56-24 win over Florida Atlantic. Both losses were by four points or fewer.
After Tulsa, Army goes to Memphis on Oct. 31. Then come Air Force and East Carolina at home, a trip to Rice, and Navy at a neutral site on Dec. 12. Beat Navy.
This Week: Game Preview from Both Sides
Army (4-2) at Tulsa (4-3) · Friday, Oct. 23, 8:30 p.m. ET · Skelly Field at H. A. Chapman Stadium, Tulsa, Okla. · ESPN2
Last time out. Army beat Florida Atlantic 56-24 at West Point on Oct. 17. The Black Knights scored on their first seven possessions, ran for 479 yards on 60 carries and threw only two passes. Tulsa beat Rice 38-17 in Houston the same day.
Army's offense vs. Tulsa's defense. The supply chain looks open. Tulsa allows 191.6 rushing yards per game, 121st in FBS. Our ground game ranks first. One caution: Tulsa is +11 in turnover margin, 3rd in FBS. Ball security is the mission. Every pitch must arrive like a supply drop, on time and on target.
Tulsa's offense vs. Army's defense. Baylor Hayes threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns at Rice, and Oran Singleton Jr. leads Tulsa with 474 receiving yards. Tulsa converts 31.3% of third downs (125th), while our defense allows 52.1% (124th). Something has to give. Kyran Duhon has six sacks for Tulsa, so protection matters on our rare passes.
Series. Army's athletics site lists Tulsa ahead 2-1 all-time. Tulsa's own site lists only the last two games, 1-1, so that's conflicting. Army won 49-7 at Tulsa in 2024. Last November, Tulsa rallied from 11 points down to win 26-25 at West Point on a 27-yard field goal with 12 seconds left. We remember.
Availability. No official conference availability report has been published. I found no confirmed Army injury news.
Three questions that decide it:
1. Can Army's top-ranked run game hold the ball against Tulsa's +11 turnover margin?
2. Can our defense improve on its 52.1% third-down rate?
3. Can Army win the possession battle, 34:42 against 27:31?
Local Flavor
Friday night in Tulsa, far from the Hudson. If you're traveling, wear your black and gold with pride and thank any service member you see. The Corps travels in spirit even when cadets can't. I'll share confirmed gathering spots for Army families before kickoff. Not an ad. Copy that, and beat Navy.
My call: Army Black Knights 28, Tulsa Golden Hurricane 24.
