Syracuse (2-4, 0-4 ACC) at North Carolina (4-2, 2-1 ACC). Saturday, Oct. 24, 7:30 p.m. ET, Kenan Stadium, Chapel Hill, ACC Network.
Your hosts are Nico Calabrese, a Syracuse fan from the Salt City who has survived more lake-effect winters than he can count, and Ainsley Pemberton, a North Carolina fan, former debutante and kinesiology PhD.
Nico: Carolina blue is nice, Ainsley, but have you ever seen a snowbank shaped like a block S? Come visit in February.
Ainsley: How charming, darling. We have dogwoods. Come in April.
Players to watch
Syracuse receiver Umari Hatcher has 50 catches for 784 yards and seven touchdowns. Steve Angeli leads the passing stats with 731 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. Running back Tylik Hill has 431 yards. Linebacker Keyshawn Johnson has four sacks, and Davien Kerr has three interceptions.
North Carolina quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. has about 1,260 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. Receiver Jordan Shipp has 33 catches for 441 yards. Defensive lineman Xavier Lewis has seven sacks, linebacker Derek McDonald leads with 55 tackles and Greg Smith III has three interceptions.
Nico: Hatcher had 224 yards last week. That's three feet overnight. Lake Ontario is jealous.
What happened last week
North Carolina beat Duke 24-20. The Tar Heels led 17-0, went more than 41 minutes without scoring, then drove 78 yards for the winner. On fourth-and-4 from his own 28, Bill Belichick went for it. "I wasn't punting again. I wanted to take our best shot," he said. Tight end Jelani Thurman caught a 12-yard pass to convert, and Jaylen McGill scored on a 24-yard run with 1:53 left. The Victory Bell rang so loudly outside the locker room it nearly interrupted Belichick's press conference.
Syracuse lost 34-26 to Louisville. Malachi Nelson threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Hatcher caught 13 passes for 224 yards, and Ahmad Miller ran for 123 yards and a touchdown.
Ainsley: The bell came home, darling. Sweetest music in the Triangle.
Injuries and availability
The official ACC availability report for this game hasn't been published yet. Angeli missed the Louisville game, and Syracuse hasn't announced its starting quarterback for Saturday. No North Carolina injury news has surfaced.
What the coaches are up to
Bill Belichick has led North Carolina since December 2024. His Tar Heels allow 19.2 points a game and average just 33.7 penalty yards, fifth in FBS.
Fran Brown has led Syracuse since November 2023. His offense throws for 291 yards a game, 12th in FBS. Three of his team's four ACC losses were one-score games.
Player storylines
Hatcher against a North Carolina pass defense ranked 69th is the matchup to watch. Penalties could swing it. Syracuse averages 98 penalty yards a game, 138th in FBS. North Carolina's offense ranks 117th in yards, but Syracuse's red-zone struggles meet a Tar Heel red-zone defense ranked 22nd.
What's happening on campus
It's Family Football Day at Kenan Stadium. North Carolina's Homecoming comes Nov. 14 against Louisville. No. 1 Miami visits Chapel Hill on Oct. 31 for Rams Club Day. This season opened overseas, against TCU in Dublin, Ireland.
Anything else fun and true
Syracuse's wins this season include a 42-41 thriller at UConn. Two years ago, Duke rallied from 20 points down to beat North Carolina in the same stadium where the Tar Heels just won.
Nico: We shovel out and go to work, Ainsley. Always.
Ainsley: Then bring a sweater, darling. Chapel Hill nights get crisp, and that bell is staying right where it is.
The Cover Window
My call: North Carolina Tar Heels 29, Syracuse Orange 19.
