Tuesday Night in the 305: Gagliano's Steady Hands Meet FIU's Stingy Defense

Middle Tennessee (3-3) at Florida International (3-3)

7:00 PM ET Tue Oct 20 · Pitbull Stadium · CBSSN

Middle Tennessee (3-3, 1-1 CUSA) at FIU (3-3, 1-1 CUSA). Tuesday, Oct. 20, 7 p.m. ET, Pitbull Stadium, Miami, CBS Sports Network.

Your hosts tonight are Lourdes Ibarguen-Tate for FIU and Opal Stonebriar for Middle Tennessee, and neither one has ever lost an argument at a family dinner.

Lourdes: Cafecito Corner is open, and it is Biscayne Blue Night at Pitbull Stadium, so wear Biscayne Blue. Abuela called it.

Opal: Sugar, I brought biscuits for the press box. I hear y'all brought a defense.

Players to watch

FIU quarterback JJ Kohl is 116 of 199 for 1,458 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. Wide receiver Maguire Anderson leads the Panthers with 33 catches for 534 yards and four scores. Defensive lineman DeeJay Holmes Jr. has five sacks and six tackles for loss, and defensive back DeAndre Boykins leads the team with 37 tackles.

Middle Tennessee counters with quarterback Roman Gagliano: 110 of 188, 1,204 yards, 11 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Antonio Martin Jr. has 433 rushing yards and Cam'ron Lacy has 369 receiving yards. Linebacker Korey Smith leads the Blue Raiders in tackles, with more than 50 already.

Opal: Two interceptions in 188 throws. That young man takes care of the football like my mama takes care of her cast iron.

Lourdes: Pretty. Now meet Holmes. My dominoes nickname for your offense is "the double-six," because we are about to slam it on the table.

What happened last week

Both teams last played Tuesday, Oct. 13. FIU lost 27-24 at Jax State when Garrison Rippa kicked a 26-yard field goal with 44 seconds left. Kohl threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns in that game, and kicker Robert Czeremcha missed from 38 and 49 yards. One week earlier, Czeremcha made a career-high five field goals in a 22-3 home win over New Mexico State, tying the program record.

Middle Tennessee rallied past Delaware 33-30. Gagliano threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns, ran for another, and finished a 10-play, 93-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Neo Clifton with 3:06 left. Koraun Perdue caught four passes for 103 yards, including an 80-yard score.

Opal: Ninety-three yards with three minutes to go, sugar. That's a Sunday-dinner drive, and everybody got seconds.

Injuries and availability

Conference USA does not publish an official availability report, and no injury news has surfaced for either team, so watch for the teams' game notes.

What the coaches are up to

Willie Simmons is in his second season at FIU. Before Miami, he won a black college national championship and a SWAC title at Florida A&M in 2023. His first FIU team went 7-6 and made the program's first bowl trip since 2019. This year's group is 3-0 at home and 0-3 on the road, and all three losses came by 10 points or fewer.

Derek Mason is in his third season at Middle Tennessee, after coaching Vanderbilt from 2014 to 2020. His Blue Raiders went 3-9 in both 2024 and 2025, so a 3-3 start already matches all of last season's wins. The road has been tough, though: losses at Marshall, Jax State and Kansas.

Opal: Bless it, we know we are 0-3 away from home. Tuesday is a fine day to fix that.

Player storylines

Czeremcha's week is the one to watch at FIU: a record-tying night against New Mexico State, then two misses in a three-point loss. Lourdes: He's a Panther. He'll bounce back. For Middle Tennessee, Clifton caught four passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns against Delaware, including the game-winner.

Statistically, this is a strength-on-strength night. FIU allows 14.7 points per game, while Middle Tennessee has only four giveaways all season.

What's happening on campus

This is FIU's last weekday game of the year, part of the CUSA "Weekday USA" schedule. The athletics department has also billed it as a "Paws at the Pit" night. Homecoming is still to come later this fall.

Lourdes: Paws at the Pit tonight, homecoming later. Opal, in Miami we don't do one party when we can do two.

Opal: Honey, in Murfreesboro we call that a long weekend.

Anything else fun and true

Middle Tennessee leads the all-time series 14-7, but FIU won the last two meetings: 35-24 in 2024 and 56-30 in Murfreesboro in 2025. And Pitbull Stadium, which opened in 1995, seats 20,000.

Opal: Fourteen to seven, sugar. Grandmama's ledger never forgets.

Lourdes: And Abuela's ledger says the last two are ours. Panther pride, Miami style.
