Massachusetts (4-3, 1-3 MAC) at UConn (3-3, independent). Friday, Oct. 23, 7 p.m. ET, Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field, East Hartford, Conn., CBS Sports Network.
Your hosts are Jo Ferrante, a Hartford-area former point guard who counts possessions, and Abner Kettleworth, a Pioneer Valley organic farmer who never misses a chance at a Revolutionary War pun.
Jo: Pack the Rent. Friday night, lights on, next possession.
Abner: One if by run, two if by pass, Jo. And I brought kale chips. Nobody will eat them.
Players to watch
UConn quarterback Kalieb Osborne has thrown for 1,421 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. Running back Cyncir Bowers has 433 yards and six touchdowns. Wide receiver Shamar Porter leads with 235 receiving yards on just 11 catches. Linebacker Hayden Pegg leads in tackles with 40, and linebacker K'Von Sherman leads in sacks with 3.5. The Huskies gain 451.8 yards per game, 24th in FBS.
UMass wide receiver T.Y. Harding leads with 28 catches for 327 yards. William Watson III has completed 74.0% of his passes for 820 yards and seven touchdowns. Elijah Faulkner leads in rushing with 361 yards, and Curtis Kimmons IV has four rushing touchdowns. Linebacker Timmy Hinspeter leads in tackles with more than 50. As a team, the Minutemen are plus-7 in turnover margin, eighth in FBS.
Jo: Porter is averaging more than 21 yards a catch. That's a full-court outlet pass.
What happened last week
UConn had a bye. Its last game was a 34-20 win at Temple on Oct. 10, with four rushing touchdowns from four different players. Trey Cornist ran seven times for 114 yards, including a 51-yard run, and Kenji Christian's only carry went 39 yards for a touchdown. Osborne went 17 of 23 for 257 yards.
UMass lost 25-18 in overtime at Buffalo on Oct. 17. Logan Inagawa played quarterback, going 14 of 25 for 168 yards with an interception and running for 66 yards and a touchdown. Faulkner ran for 84 yards and scored.
Abner: Two of our three losses came by a point or in overtime. That's a militia one musket short.
Injuries and availability
No official conference availability report has been published for this game. UMass hasn't named its starting quarterback after Inagawa played at Buffalo, while Watson is the season passing leader. No injury news has surfaced for either team.
What the coaches are up to
Jason Candle is in his first season at UConn after coaching Toledo from 2016 to 2025. His offense works, but his pass defense allows 290.5 yards per game, 135th in FBS, and the Huskies average 79.0 penalty yards a game. UConn plays as an independent, so bowl eligibility is the goal. Three of its last five games after Friday are at home.
Joe Harasymiak is in his second season at UMass. Maine made him the youngest head coach in Division I in 2015, and his 2018 team won the CAA. He was later defensive coordinator at Rutgers. His defense allows just 19.1 points per game, 33rd in FBS. The Minutemen opened 4-0, including a 37-21 win at Rutgers.
Player storylines
Cornist's 114 yards on seven carries make him the Husky to watch. For UMass, the story is who plays quarterback. On paper, UConn's high-octane offense faces a UMass defense that has returned two interceptions for touchdowns.
Jo: Turnovers are steals. Don't give that defense any.
What's happening on campus
UConn's schedule bills Friday as "Cancer Awareness" and "The Rent at Night". Homecoming isn't part of this one; UMass held its homecoming weekend against Miami (Ohio) earlier this month. This is a nonconference game, since UConn is an FBS independent.
Abner: Shot heard 'round the film room, Jo. We're marching south.
Jo: Bring the fife and drum. We'll bring the noise.
Anything else fun and true
This is a New England border game. UConn went 4-2 against UMass from 2016 to 2025, and Jo has every one of those wins filed under "fast breaks." UConn's 42-41 overtime loss to Syracuse was one of the wildest games of its season.
Abner: Paul Revere's report says it'll be close. One lantern, two lanterns, a whole barn full of lanterns.
Jo: Paul Revere never saw Osborne push the pace. Next play.
The Cover Window
My call: UConn Huskies 33, Massachusetts Minutemen 20.
