Duke at Virginia

Duke (4-2) at Virginia (4-3)

7:00 PM ET Fri Oct 23 · Scott Stadium · ESPN

Last December these two played for the ACC title. Friday night they play for a little dignity after both lost last week. Prescott Ashby-Lowell would like everyone to know it's the Grounds, not the campus.

Duke (4-2) at Virginia (4-3), Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. It's an ACC game, a rematch of the 2025 ACC Championship Game, and Family Weekend on the Grounds. DraftKings has Virginia Cavaliers −1.5 with a total of 46.5. My card: Virginia Cavaliers −1.5, Over 46.5, and a final of Virginia Cavaliers 25, Duke Blue Devils 23.

Prescott speaks for Virginia, a fourth-generation Wahoo. "We are 4-0 at home, sir. All three of our losses came away from Scott Stadium. And Beau Pribula has 13 touchdown passes and one interception."

Harrison Wexley-Moore IV speaks for Duke, a pre-everything overachiever with a degree for every occasion. "Nate Sheppard is a double major, Prescott. He has 820 rushing yards and eight scores, and he leads us in receiving. Summa cum laude."

Sheppard is the matchup of the night. Virginia's run defense ranks 88th at 152.7 yards a game, and he caught 11 passes against North Carolina last week on top of 77 rushing yards.

So why Virginia? Home field, mostly, and the turnover margin. The Cavaliers are plus-5, and Duke gives up 73.8 penalty yards a game, 123rd in FBS. In a game this close, free yards and extra possessions decide it. Virginia also went 8-2 against Duke from 2016 to 2025. My final has the Cavaliers by two, which clears the 1.5 by a whisker.

The caveat is real. Duke has lost two straight by four points or fewer, 24-20 to North Carolina and 28-25 at Georgia Tech. This is a team that keeps games close. And Duke's defense holds opponents to 29.2% on third down, ninth in FBS, while Virginia converts just 33.0%, 120th.

Why the Over? My 25-23 adds up to 48, a point and a half over 46.5. Sheppard against that run defense should move the chains. Da'Shawn Martin has five touchdown catches on just 15 receptions. Virginia's red-zone scoring, 124th in FBS, is the thing that could keep this Under, so watch the field goals.

Now the room, and the boss is outnumbered. Only Next Man Up is on Virginia with me, at 25-21, and it calls the Under. The Formula has Virginia 25-24, a one-point game, so it takes Duke +1.5. Letdown Watch has Virginia 26-25 and likes the Over. Follow The Money likes Duke, and In The Trenches sits this one out.

Letdown Watch opened: "Next Man Up, you're the only one in here with a four-point game. Did Duke forget how to lose close?"

Next Man Up answered: "Duke lost by four last week. I'm just reading the box score."

The Formula added: "Twenty-five to 24. That's a coin with a helmet on."

Follow The Money had the last word: "Duke and the Under. When you're right, you don't need a crowd."

Bottom of the card: the home team that hasn't lost at home, a road team that loses close, and a number small enough that two points does the job. Wear blue, Prescott says. I'll lay the 1.5.

Virginia Cavaliers 25, Duke Blue Devils 23. Virginia Cavaliers cover the 1.5. Over 46.5.
